Notes for PENELOPE MILLS: Some people have Penny listed as Penelope Wallraven/Walraven and that she died between 1840-59 in MO. The information is from the family book on the Haddock family. Some researchers have the place of birth as Chicod, Pitt Co., NC., and others have Haddock Plant as the place where the Haddock family lived in NC. Charles and Penny Haddock's deed of land to their son Allen was for 80 acres in 1845 in Newton County, Missouri. They reserved the right of their own use of it during their lifetime. The will of Anthony Mills was proved in June of 1808 in Craven County, NC. The will listed his children that included Nasby Mills and Penny Haddock. Frankie Meyer is the Haddock researcher who made this discovery. Pitt County was formerly part of Craven County before it became Pitt. There have been so many tales told and retold about Penny Haddock that probably no one will ever know the truth about her. It must be the unknown factor about Penny that adds all the mystery. Long ago a family story got started that she was a Cherokee Indian. Based on the family pictures of the older members of the Haddock family, it is very doubtful that the story is true, but nevertheless, it was a story that the family passed about from one to another. It soon became fact, because it had been told and retold. The story began that Penny was Penny Richards and she was Cherokee. Then about 20 years ago the story spread about from family member to family member that Penny was Penny Walraven and a Cherokee Indian. Most Haddock researchers now think that she was not Penny Walraven, but Penny Mills. It is true that the Wallraven/Walraven family was Indian. Prudence Walraven who married into the Crumley family lived in Barry County and was Cherokee Indian. At the same time the discovery of the Walraven and Crumley connection came into focus, it was also learned that Prudence Walraven was from GA., and that she lived on Capps Creek TWP., Barry Co., MO. Since the Crumley family had several members who married into the Haddock family and Prudence sounds somewhat like Penelope perhaps that is how the story got started. It’s not easy to explain such things. Most Haddock researchers will tell you that the Walraven name could never be proven for Penny. It was not a factual thing, just a name that someone gave her based on hearsay. It’s time for the Haddock researchers to do more research. At any rate, it’s possible that is where the confusion started. It is almost certain that a lot of assuming was done instead of researching the Haddock family. Once the story was printed and sold in book form - the data became fact to a lot of people. No one seemed to question - or to look beyond what the printed words stated. It seemed that every time a new Haddock book came out -- Penny got a new name. As mentioned earlier, she was first Penny Richards, then she became Penny Walraven. Now she is Penny Mills. What name will Penny have next? Penny is buried at Redfield, KS. According to the Mt Orum Cemetery plat records, she is buried near her daughter, Penny Petty, and her husband Charles Haddock. 1870 Barry Co., MO., census in house 95 on Capps Creek TWP., Barry Co., MO. was Crumley, Prude. Penelope Haddock: Some have Penny as Amy Wallraven and others had her listed as Indian Wallraven. LDS ancestor file has Amy Wallraven. Some think that she must have died in Boone Co., MO.
