Barry County Missouri Ancestors - The Mooney Family Timothy Patrick Mooney Submitted by: Donna Cooper Goodspeed's History, 1888, Barry Co., MO. T.P. Mooney landed at Boston, Massachusetts, May 4, 1851. He stayed in Boston, Massachusetts for a short time then went to Brattleboro, VT., where he worked on a farm for a few months. He then went to N.Y., N.Y. and then to New Jersery where he worked for New Jersery Central Railroad as a bookkeeper. T.P. Mooney then decided to go west and went then to Cambridge, Ohio where he clerked in a hotel. From there he went to Cincinnati, Ohio and on to Madison, Indiana where he took a contract to help build part of the O&M Railroad. At the completion of the contract he went to Jefferson Co., MO. where he opened a general merchandise store at Blackwell Station. In 1857 he removed his stock of goods to Mexico, MO. At a later date, he sold his stock of goods and entered into the grocery business. In the fall of 1862, he sold his stock of groceries and again engaged in the general merchandise business. In 1867, he removed to Barry Co., MO. to Washburn, MO. where he resumed in the merchandise business. He also build a hotel which he operated until 1887. His health failing him, in 1871, he retired. In 1878, T.P. and a partner, Robert Houston, started dealing in stock, buying and shipping cattle from Texas to St Louis and the Eastern States. He then resumed in 1881 without a partner, having bought out Houston. In 1887, he moved his business to O'Day (now all a part of Washburn -- just an old name for Washburn.) On May 25, 1865, T.P. Mooney married Mary B. Sims, a native of Audrain Co., MO., who was born in 1845. They had one child. Florence V. Mooney who md Clay Gregory of Audrain Co., MO. T.P. Mooney was a Presbyterian and a Democrat. He was a member of the A.F and A. M. T.P. Mooney is buried at Washburn, MO., Washburn Prairie. Barry Co., court records: Mooney, T.P to W.K. Plummer and A.H. Wear Oct 25, 1875, Barry Co., MO. 1908 Cassville Democrat paper ran the following: T.P. Mooney's new store opened, later was robbed. J.H. Mooney mentioned in the article about the store. James Harvey Mooney, better known as Jamie Mooney spent almost his life in Washburn, MO. It is now believed that Timothy Patrick Mooney was really Jamie Mooney's father. We may never know, but we have accepted that fact as of this date. America Simpson, an unwed mother, was his mother, but T.P. and his wife raised Jamie as their own.
