It follows the lives of eleven grandchildren of Irish emigrant, John Champ Carlin, and his descendants, several of whom settled in Barry, Lawrence, Jasper, Newton, and McDonald counties. In addition to Carlin, some of the descendants have the last names of: Haddock, Spriggs, Sparks, Kemper, Withers, Brown, Zinn, Johnson, Fee, and Hudson. The book has maps, wills, other probate records, obituaries, records of estate sales, cemetery records, marriage records, letters, land records, newspaper articles, as well as photographs of families, churches, memorabilia, etc. Each of the seven chapters has footnotes, and there is a bibliography at the end. Maria was the wife of Asa Carlin. They travelled to Barry County with their family in a covered wagon from Virginia in 1856, and they settled in the Stone Prairie area. Her ancestors and cousins fought in the Rev. War, they founded towns, served as presidents, senators, and representatives. One ancestor was a rear admiral. One cousin signed the Declaration of Independence Her grandfather was a minuteman and an Indian doctor. Two ancestors founded the town of Barnstable in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was a cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Through her Coggswell ancestry, her descendants are cousins of Princess Di, and they are therefore cousins of the future king of England.
