Another summons has taken from our county, a good man and citizen that enjoyed the good will and friendship of all acquaintances. He had obeyed divine injunction and he bid this world adieu, with the firm hope of a home in that “land of pure delight.” George H. Owings was born Oct. 1, 1858, in Fleming county, Kentucky, and came to Barry County thirty odd years ago, where he has lived a peaceful and quiet life. He died Sept. 8, 1923, at 7 p.m. at his home southwest of this city, 3 1/4 miles of cancer. He was converted at age of 32 years, at a meeting held by late E.W. McCracken and Rev. Harvey Weston, in August, 1891 and united with Presbyterian Church. His wife and there children survive him, who are: Vance Owings of near Exeter, Mrs. Mable Baker and Mrs. Leonard McCandlesa of near Cassville, as well as three grandchildren. Also one sister and brother both of Indiana. He was married August, 31, 1884, to Mess Emma B. Hays, and their lives had been of love and satisfaction. He was an unassuming man, quiet and with a manifest good feeling for all his friends and neighbors. NOTE: Vol. I, pg. 56. of Barry County Cemeteries shows burial place as Corinth Cemetery aka Huff Cemetery. The cemetery book shows year of birth as 1859, not 1858; shows year of death 1924, not 1923. Wife, Emma, is also buried there. Return to Online Data Index Return to Barry County © 1999 Susan Tortorelli All Rights Reserved
