According to Anne Howard, the church of Christ was first begun in Johnstown in 1853. Set in order by Dr. Downing From Kentucky - who went back there under order NO. 11 in time of Civil War. At that time plans were to build the church building where the Cemetery is now. The pond on Mrs. Craig's place was a brick kiln - and the foundation rocks are still in the road southeast corner of present cemetery fence. That makes the Johnstown church of Christ 92 years old at this time. Some of the charter members were Anne Harbert (Aunt Dal) Ive and Bone Coleman Sis Ramsey The McCools Billy and Nancy Gates and others - about 19 members in all at first.
