RIGGS UNION CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY, BOONE COUNTY, MISSOURI Riggs, Boone County, Missouri DIRECTIONS: Riggs Union Church is located approximately 12 miles north of Columbia and one and one-half miles west on U. S. 63 on a parcel of land in the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Township 51N, Range 13W, Section 35 of the Boone County Plat Map. HISTORY: RIGGS UNION CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (now known as) RIGGS UNION CHURCH The Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized on September 20, 1830 with church property valued at $200 with 47 communicants# and remained active until approximately 1927.# There was never any official action taken by the McGee Presbytery to de-activate the Church.# The ‘Minutes of McGee Presbytery’ and the ‘Minutes of the General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church’ from 1835 until 1927 are available on the Internet at www.cumberland.org/HFCPC/Churches/UnionMO.htm giving the names of the Elders and Ministers serving the congregation during that period with the most prevalent names being R. S. Woods, George, John D., T. C. and M. M. Rowland, Proctors, Seymours, King, Gallup and Schooling.# Within the minutes of the McGee Presbytery, Missouri Synod, a few of the more interesting minutes are cited and are as follows: 1838 - Resolved that R. C. Mansfield preach once a month at Pleasant Hill, Union and Mound Meeting House.# 1839 - Bro. Robert Roland conversed with Presbytery, as to his experimental acquaintance with religion, & his internal call & motive to the work of the holy ministry’ & he being in the communion of the church’ was received as a candidate for the ministry’ & he is hereby ordered to prepare a written discourse, from St. John, 10th Chap, & 9th verse to be read at the next session of Presbytery.# 1849 - The Presbytery resolved itself into a committee of the whole for the purpose of taking into consideration a document presented to Presbytery signed by Bro. M. M. Barron. After deliberation the committee rose and reported progress, and were discharged from further consideration of the subject. On motion, the following was adopted. Whereas a charge of mal- administration being presented by Bro. M. M. Barron against the church session of Union congregation, this Presbytery requires that a copy of the charges together with the names of the witnesses to sustain the charge be sent to the said church session, and that they be required to appear before the next session of this Presbytery, and answer to said charge of which the following is a copy. To the Moderator and Members of McGee Presbytery. Dear Brethren. Feeling aggrieved by the action of Union Church session, I prefer the following charge of mal-administration against the above named session, (to wit): Robert Rowland, John D. Rowland and Wm. Stogdel. Specification 1st. For partiality in the trial of Robert Schooling, July the first 1848, in receiving inferential testimony in behalf of the accused, and refusing the same on part of the church. Specification 2nd. A violation of the book of discipline in failing to make a full record of the testimony given in the case. Specification 3rd. A violation of the book in discipline in suspending Susanah Hall without any charge of immorality or heresy being preferred against her. Specification 4th. Contempt of the Presbytery in refusing to comply with the advice given to remove the censure placed on Susanah Hall. Specification 5th. In refusing to grant Daniel Hall a letter of dismission and recommendation for the space of 7 months, there being no charge of immorality or heresy against him. Matthias M. Barron Names of witnesses to sustain the charge of mal-administration against the session of Union congregation, Joseph T. Kinkade, Wm. Kinkade, James W. Reid, James H. Hall, Edward Graves, James Green, Nicholas Woods, and John Seymour.# 1859 - When Organized: Sep. 20, 1830 Value of Church Property: 200.00 How Often Preaching per Month: 1 No. Communicants: 47# 1883 - An opportunity was given to any one desiring so to do to converse with Presbytery on the experiences of grace and the evidences of an internal call to the work of the ministry, whereupon, J. W. Henderson, of the Union Congregation, came forward and gave a satisfactory relation of these things, and was received under the care of the Presbytery.# The following list of ministers for the Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church were obtained from minutes of McGee Presbytery and were: R. C. Mansfield J. L. Routt F. E. Haynes J. K. Craven G. T. Pool L. W. Cunningham Geo. E. Turner J. T. Shearon A. M. Buchanan# The information cited below is UNPROVEN and is provided for the benefit of anyone desiring to do further research on the Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church and its successor, Riggs Union Church (Methodist). First, from the book ‘Tombstone Records of Boone County, Missouri’ by Mrs. E. E. Evans and Mrs. J. F. Thompson of Columbia, Missouri, ca. 1933: UNION CHURCH Cumberland Presbyterian, at Riggs Sec. 35, Township 51, Range 13 “This is the only Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the county. It was organized in 1832; the original members were: Robert Rowland & wife; Robert Schooling & wife; James, Nancy & Susannah Schooling; and Barnabas S. Woods & wife, (all from Ky.) Robert Rowland settled in this location in 1827, he cleared the land and donated the site for the church, and was the leading spirit in organizing the church. He married may couples in this community. (The remainder of the pages are the transcription of the cemetery).”# Second: From a letter written by Mr. A. W. March, not dated and personal remarks have been deleted: “The first building was erected soon after 1830 and was located on land owned by William Seymour. The first building was destroyed by fire and another house of worship was erected not far from the site of the first building. In 1854, William Seymour sold the property and at that time he made a deed deeding the church and cemetery site to the Trustees of the Union Church. During the construction of the second church building, it was stipulated that the church building was to be used by other ecclesiastical denominations when not being used by Cumberland Presbyterian.” Transcribed by: Albert C. & Mary Ann Pace Girard, IL Kenneth & Lorine Tackaberry Litchfield, IL 03/09/01 This listing is alphabetical by surname irrespective of the given name on the headstone and, where possible, by family. ================================================================ A Acton, Edith G. 1905 - 1908 *Alexander, George W.
