Biographical Sketch of A. D. Bortle, St. Joseph, Buchanan County, MO >From "History of Buchanan County, Missouri, Published 1881, St. Joseph Steam Printing Company, Printers, Binders, Etc., St. Joseph, Missouri. ********************************************************************** A. D. Bortle, broom manuafacturer, was born in Middleburg, Schoharie County, New York, on March 3, 1852, and when three years of age em- igrated to Wisconsin, his father, J. H. Bortle, locating with his family in West Salem, LaCrosse County, being among the early settlers in that section. A. D. was there raised and educated. The family was located for a time in Minnesota, but vacated the state during the Indian massacre. In 1869, our subject went to Clear Lake, Iowa, where he remained one and a half years; thence to Stewartsville, Missouri, where he learned the broom making trade. For five years he was in a factory at Falls City, Nebraska, and took up his abode in St. Joseph, Missouri, in the autumn of 1879. The superiority of his goods has attained a wide spread and well merited reputation. He was married, in 1881, to Miss Ida Bliss.
