Biographical Sketch of Joseph Bernard, St. Joseph, Buchanan County, MO >From "History of Buchanan County, Missouri, Published 1881, St. Joseph Steam Printing Company, Printers, Binders, Etc., St. Joseph, Missouri. ********************************************************************** Joseph Bernard, grocer, corner of Fourth and Isabelle Streets, was born in Alsace, France on February 28, 1826; was there educated, and resided, until he attained his twenty-sixth year. His father, Marc, was an agriculturist in that country. In 1852, our subject came to the United States, residing three years in Louisiana, where he learned the cooper's trade; was also clerk for a time in a country store. He next went to Iowa, and resided temporarily at West Liberty, Indianola, and other points, engaged, principally in saw mill work; and was also for awhile a resident of Nebraska. In March, 1858, took up his abode in St. Joseph, Missouri. He engaged in the hardware establishment of John Colhoun & Bro., on Second Street, and was in that house for ten years, and he then embarked in trade. He is favorably known in St. Joseph, and throughout the county, and does a lucrative trade. On August 9, 1860, Miss Julia Montavon, of Alsace, France, became his wife. They have eight child- ren: Mary J., Julia C., Joseph J., Emily C., Lucy L., Isabelle L., Louis A., Helen M.
