J. B. Howel, grocer, among the first settlers of the Platte Purchase,
and a man who has figured conspicuously in the pioneer days in North-
western Missouri, is our subject. He is a native of Washington
County, Kentucky, and was born December 1, 1816. At an early age he
removed to Indiana with his parents, and afterwards to Illinois. His
father, Benjamin, died when J. B. was quite young. The latter sub-
sequently returned to Indiana, and in 1839, came to Missouri, locating
in what was known as Jimtown, Andrew County, five miles northeast of
the present site of St. Joseph. Here he engaged in the furniture
trade, continuing until the autumn of 1841, when he removed to Savan-
nah, where he was interested in trade for a number of years, and at
times was engaged in agricultural pursuits. In September, 1867, he
established himself in trade in St. Joseph. For forty two years Mr.
Howel watched the development of the Platte Purchase, and to that
development he has contributed amploy, and few residents at the
present day are more widely known. He is a gentleman, unassuming in
his demeanor, and popular with the masses. In 1850, he went to
California by the overland route, and was gone about one year. He
was married in 1848, to Miss Elizabeth Carroll, of Kentucky. They
had two children, one of whom is living: Benson A. Prince Edward is
deceased.
