Biographical Sketch of Nelson Hawley, Wayne Township, Buchanan County, MO

Nelson Hawley, section 12, postoffice St. Joseph, was born in Vigo
County, Indiana May 3, 1830, and when seven years of age his parents,
Stephen and Deborah (Rector) Hawley, moved to Louisa County, Iowa. In
1839 Nelson came to Buchanan County, Missouri, where he has since re-
sided excepting two years when he was in Doniphan County, Kansas. He
has followed farming from boyhood, and has 182 acres of land in this
county and 120 acres in Kansas. His home farm contains 110 acres. He
was married September 15, 1853, to Miss Samantha Moore. She is a
native of Indiana and was born April 13, 1836. They have had eight
children, seven of whom are living: Sarah J., born August 11, 1854;
James M., born July 11, 1856; Stephen T., born November 13, 1858; John
L., born December 25, 1862; Florence, born May 6, 1864; Louis N., born
October 7, 1867; and Aldora, born September 14, 1869.
