Biographical Sketch of Anton Klos, St. Joseph, Buchanan County, MO

Anton Klos was born November 30, 1829 at Prombach, Hessen Darmstadt,
Germany, where he received his education. When sixteen years of age
he emigrated to America, embarking for New Orleans, where he arrived
in 1845. Soon after he removed to St. Louis, Missouri, where he
learned the trade of cigar making, and remained five years. In 1850,
he came to St. Joseph, and engaged in the cigar and tobacco business,
which he carried on fourteen years. In 1864, he commenced as a whole-
sale leaf tobacco dealer, buying and shipping leaf tobacco, which was
raised from forty to fifty miles around St. Joseph. Having accumula-
ted wealth, he invested much in real estate, and is among our large
tax payers. In 1876, he retired from active business life. He was
married October 25, 1864, to Miss Elise Deppen, who died November 17,
1869. He has two children: Harvey, born May 13, 1865 and Edward,
born December 23, 1867.
