Biographical Sketch of Friedrich Ohsten, St. Joseph, Buchanan County, MO >From "History of Buchanan County, Missouri, Published 1881, St. Joseph Steam Printing Company, Printers, Binders, Etc., St. Joseph, Missouri. ********************************************************************** Friedrich Ohsten, who is among the oldest citizens of St. Joseph, was born May 5, 1802, near Stade, Hanover, where he was raised and learned the trade of miller. He emigrated to America in 1846, and arrived at New York, from which place he went to Buffalo, where he found employ- ment on a steamboat. He made trips to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1847, and from there to New Orleans during one year. In 1848, he went to Ken- tucky, where he worked at the general merchandise business for two years, with success. In 1850, he came to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he settled and followed his occupation for ten years. On account of failing health, he was compelled to retire from business, and invest- ed his means in real estate. He was married in 1849, in Kentucky, to Miss Carolina Grubitz, a native of Peyne, Hanover, Germany.
