Michael Purcell, M.D., was born in Ireland, in 1820. He came to this
country in 1839, and settled in Rhode Island, remaining until 1848,
when he went to Indiana, and two years afterwards to St. Joseph, Miss-
ouri. He had fine opportunities for obtaining an education, which
were eagerly embraced. He studied medicine with some of the best
physicians in France and Belgium, and took a regular course at the
University of Luvanne, where he was graduated, receiving the degree
of M. D. In his practice he has made very little noise or ado, but
those who employ him have always found him skilled and successful. He
was married to Mary Jane Mitchell, in St. Joseph, in 1855. They have
twelve children. Of these, John, Steeley, Molly, William, Frank and
George are living.
