Biographical Sketch of J. R. Woodruff, Agency Township, Buchanan County, MO >From "History of Buchanan County, Missouri, Published 1881, St. Joseph Steam Printing Company, Printers, Binders, Etc., St. Joseph, Missouri. ********************************************************************** J. R. Woodruff, farmer, section 17, post office Agency, was born in West Virginia, March 10, 1832, and with his parents moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania, when he was quite small. He received a good ed- ucation, and in 1862, moved to Knox County, Ohio. He drove cattle to Philadelphia and New York from Illinois. In 1856, he went to Warren County, Iowa, and emigrated to St. Joseph, Missouri in 1857. In 1858, he married Mary C. Jesse, born in Tennessee, August 20, 1841. They have had five children: Ella, born February 20, 1864; W. M., born May 2, 1867; Ransom, born June 30, 1871; Orville, born August 6, 1859, died in June, 1862; and Iona, born in May, 1861 and died in September, 1861. He owns forty acres of land, under good cultivation. Takes a great interest in educational matters, and has been school director for years in District No. 3. His daughter is but sixteen years of age, and has taught school three years.
