Biographical Sketch of Emil Winkler, Rush Township, Buchanan County, MO >From "History of Buchanan County, Missouri, Published 1881, St. Joseph Steam Printing Company, Printers, Binders, Etc., St. Joseph, Missouri. ********************************************************************** Emil Winkler, dealer in groceries and provisions, East Atchison, was born May 16, 1849, in Prussia, Germany, and spent his boyhood days on a farm, receiving his education in the schools of that vicinity. At the age of fourteen years, he commenced to learn the milling business, and followed it for nine years. In the spring of 1872, he emigrated to America, and landed at New York City, coming to Atchison, Kansas, where he engaged as clerk in a grocery store, and he remained three years in that capacity, and then opened at his present location, in East Atchison, in 1876. His store is filled with a complete stock of general groceries and provisions, and he has a fair patronage. He was married December 5, 1875, to Miss Pauline Reuthinger, daughter of F. Reuthinger, present Mayor of East Atchison. She is a native of this state, and was born February 11, 1856. They have had three children, two of whom are living: Carl T. and Rosa. Himself and wife are members of the Lutheran Church, and he is a member of the Knights of Honor.
