The case was then continued on account of the sickness of her sister-in-law, who was sitting by her side at the time Huting deliberately blew out her brains with a double barrel gun. He is a youth of prepossessing appearance (an appearance that is attractive, pleasing, and makes a favorable impression on others), and not more than 18 years of age. Hon. John Jameson and Jefferson Jones, Esq., have been assigned by the court to defend him. Can a jury find him guilty of maliciously killing the person whom he loves (as all agree) better than his own life? Insanity will not be relied upon in his defense.” John Huting, Hannibal Weekly Messenger, (Hannibal, Marion County, Missouri), Thu, Sep 13, 1855, Page 3, Newspapers.com online, https://www.newspapers.com/image/1029397823/?terms=john%20huting, accessed 7 Sep 2025 Hung.—John Huting was executed in Danville, Montgomery County, on Friday last, 31st ult (31st ult" means the last Friday of the previous month, 31 Jul 1855), for the murder of a young lady in that place, some four years ago.—Long before the hour of execution, the town was crowded with people some from the country and some from adjoining counties, all anxious, to witness the last moments of a human being. Huting himself manifested but little interest in anything except the coming of a priest, for whom he had sent several days before. The priest, arrived on Thursday night and remained with him till the hour of his execution. Huting seemed perfectly resigned, mounted the scaffold and adjusted the rope himself without exhibiting the lightest trepidation. Before his execution and while under the gallows, he made quite a lengthy speech, and then requested his confession which had written out, to be read. At 3 o’clock p.m. the drop fell and John Huting went to receive his reward in the spirit world. Fulton Telegraph. Additional Comments: John’s profession was unknown the county noted on deathpenaltyusa is Buchanan County but, the murder took place in Montgomery county.
