French, 402 South 12th Street, announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Jane, to George Cameron Hurst Jr. of Minneapolis, son of Mr. And Mrs. George Cameron Hurst of Kansas City. The wedding will take place in the early spring. Miss French is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. Mr. Hurst is a graduate of Westminster College, Fulton, Mo., and is a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Nelson-Nash Engagement Mr. And Mrs. Frank J. Nelson, announced the engagement of their daughter, Madeleine Barat Nelson, to Robert A. Nash Jr., son of Mr. And Mrs. R.A. Nash, of St. Joseph. The wedding will take place early in February. Miss Nash is a graduate of the Academy of the Sacred Heart and she attended St. Joseph Junior College. Mr. Nash was graduated from Christian Brothers' High School, and he attended Junior College. Mr. Nash is a grandson of A.E. Nash, county treasurer, and Mrs. Nash Carle-Stevens Miss Carolyn Carle, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Horace Carle, will be married to Donald Elton Stevens, son of Mr. And Mrs. B.C. Stevens, at 4:30 this afternoon in Christ Episcopal Church. VanFossen-Sargent Miss Betty Lou VanFossen of Bolckow, Mo., and Verle F. Sargent of St. Joseph were married at 4:00 yesterday afternoon at the home of the officiating minister, the Rev. W. Edward Purdy, pastor of Mitchell Park Christian Church. Mr. And Mrs. J.R. Church were the attendants. Announce Engagement Rabbi and Mrs. Iser Levine, announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Ruth Levine of Chicago, to Dr. Milton Saffir of Chicago. No date has been set for the wedding. Miss Levine and Dr. Saffir arrived here this week to make a brief visit at the home of Miss Levine's parents. Wed Fifty-Eight Years Mr. And Mrs. W.O. Smith, who were married December 25, 1879, will observe their 58th wedding anniversary today. A family dinner will be served at 6:00 this evening at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. And Mrs. E.E. Sipes, with whom they are residing. Both Mr. And Mrs. Smith are 84 years old. Mrs. Smith, who was Ellen Frederick, was born in Pennsylvania. Mr. Smith was born in Kentucky. They were married in Chillicothe, Mo., where they resided until about 15 years ago, when they came to St. Joseph. Mr. Smith is a retired blacksmith. They are the parents of 8 children, five of whom are living and who will attend the anniversary dinner tonight. They are James Smith of Kansas City; Jesse Smith, Lyons, Kansas; Mrs. Fred Huth, Atchison, Kansas; and Mrs. Sipes and Mrs. O.H. Shoemake of St. Joseph. They have 16 grandchildren.
