BUTLER COUNTY MISSOURI poplar bluff ole cemetery Copyright 1997, 2001 by Betty Hanks and Terry McLean, tmclean@earthlink.net. ) POPLAR BLUFF - OLD CITY (#80) T24N R6E SEC 3 Map #7 This, the original city cemetery, was located between what is now 5th & 6th street, on Pine Blvd and was last used about 1886. As the city began to expand beyond its earlier bounds it was decided to relocate the cemetery. In 1897/98 about 40 graves were moved to what is now City Cemetery. In June of 1906, while doing some grading on the location, workmen uncovered the remains of a grave. At least two graves were found at that time. As Carolyn Yarber reported in the Butler County History, additional graves were uncovered in the 1940’s or 1950’s. Speculation is that those found were buried so early that records were not kept, and thus they were not found when the main relocation took place. Perhaps there were no markers and the graves were so old as to be overlooked. Some suggested it might be the graves of indigents or travelers who died in the cholera epidemic.... It may also have been that without identification and no means of obtaining approval of relatives, the remains could not be moved. Whatever the cause, those graves uncovered were left undisturbed in their original resting place. At this time, the northwest corner of Pine and 6th street has a small, pleasantly landscaped area with a large oak, that is left undeveloped, reportedly as a memorial to those unknown individuals who were buried there. The graves that were relocated are now found in the northeast corner of the Sunny Slope addition of City Cemetery. Not all markers were legible, many were deeply buried, and some stones were broken, but we were able to get some information.
