BUTLER COUNTY MISSOURI thurman epps cemetery Copyright 1997, 2001 by Betty Hanks and Terry McLean, tmclean@earthlink.net. ) THURMAN - EPPS CEMETERY (#24) ? T24N R5E SEC 4 Map #6 The condition of this old abandoned cemetery is typical of many of the small cemeteries in the county. The overgrowth makes them difficult to find, and once found, difficult to access. What markers are left in these old cemeteries are soon lost to decay and the abundant overgrowth. Located in woods on what was the Joseph EPPS land, there are about a dozen recognizable markers scattered around. Many are rocks with no legible inscription. Only two have event faintly legible markings. I have visited this cemetery more than once over the years in the company of both Arnold Epps and John Thurman. Most of the family and historical background was related by them. The photos were taken by myself. I also have a transcription of an EPPS family bible record in my possession that provided some dates. Additional information and family relationships provided to me by Arnold EPPS. Mr. Epps stated this was probably the THURMAN family cemetery. The VANDOVER family was related to the THURMAN family. A. T. [Probably a THURMAN family member possibly that of John THURMAN’s grandmother] M. H. V. March 1887 [from the bible record: M. H. VANDOVER 36 Apr 1838 -18 Mar 1887] Others reported to have been buried here are: DUN, twin babies [Children of Alley DUN] VANDOVER, Martha VANDOVER, Cage [Micajah] [Parents of Pearl THURMAN, as confirmed by her grandson Davin THURMAN. This VANDOVER couple raised James A. EPPS, whose mother died when he was 3 weeks old. Arnold EPPS, who was a great source of help with this family information., is the son of James EPPS] The following two records are from the EPPS family bible record - it may be assumed that Thomas VANDOVER is also buried here: MARTHA EPPS VANDOVER 2 Feb 1842 - 30 Jul 1884 [see record below - the date differs slightly] THOMAS N.
