Transcribed by Mary Hudson mahud@fidnet.com July and later in the year, 2000 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- STEWART, David David Stewart, who played football for the Mules for three years and graduated from Senior High School last May, died at 5:30 p.m. yesterday at the Baptist Hospital in Little Rock. He was 19. David, who was attending Southwest Missouri State College at Springfield this year, (1964), was visiting in Poplar Bluff over the weekend when he became ill. He visited a local doctor, who sent him to Little Rock. About the first of the year he became ill and it was first feared that he had a brain tumor. Following surgery it was found that he had suffered tissue damage from polio as a child. He made a rapid recovery and returned here to graduate from Senior High School. He resided with an uncle, the Rev. O.S. Free, who was pastor of the First Nazarene Church at that time. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. James Stewart of 2606 Cross Street in Little Rock. Coach Jim Lohr stated he talked with the Rev. Free yesterday afternoon who said David was seriously ill and had undergone minor surgery, but doctors said his condition was not critical. About 5:30 yesterday afternoon he started hemorrhaging and died soon afterward. Funeral arrangements had not been learned this morning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HAWORTH J.L. Funeral services were held at 2 yesterday afternoon for Dr. J. L. Haworth who died March 3 at his home. The Rev. William Tibbett conducted final rites at the Frank-Cotrell Chapel, and burial was in the City Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MORGAN Harry Fisk- Harry Morgan, 79 and a retired farmer of Fisk, died Saturday February 20 at the Doctors Hospital after an illness of one day. A resident of Butler county for 60 years, he was born on March 12, 1886 in Illinois. He was married to Elsie Hall, who preceded him in death. His survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Annabelle Grove, Detroit, MI. Mrs. Sophronia Grove, Climax, Minnesota; one son, Carl Morgan, Fisk; three brothers, Mike, James and Tom of Fisk, one sister, Ella Crawford of Fisk, 20 grandchildren and 25 great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 at the Fisk General Baptist Church. Rev. W. V.Mosby will officiate and burial will be in the Brown Chapel Cemetery. He was a former resident of Butler county and was born here on 1909 near Fisk Community. His body will be returned to Poplar Bluff where Greer Croy and Fitch Funeral Home will be in charge of services. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Stucker of Poplar Bluff and Mrs John Crider ofSt. Louis; a brother rEarl Jackson of Frankston, TX. and one half-sister, Mrs. Fay Horned of Hurst, TX. Funeral services for Oscar W. Garver, 48, year-old Broseley community farmer, who died at 9 o'clock Friday morning in the Brandon Hospital here, were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the Brown Chapel Church at Broseley. Burial was in the Brown Chapel Cemetery Seriously ill for a week prior to his death, he had been in ill health for more than one year. Among the survivors are his widow, Mrs. Edith Garver; one son, George DAvid; one stepson, Curtis Boyer; a sister, Mrs. T.A. Forbes, Poplar Bluff, and his father George Garver, chairman of the Butler county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROSE, Stella Stella May Rose, 84-year-old resident of Flat River and a former resident of Fisk and Williamsville, died yesterday at the Bonne Terre Hospital. She was born January 20, 1885 and on August 26, 1900 was married to Charles Rose. her husband and five children preceded her in death. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Helen Moore, St. Louis, Mrs. Nellie Gard of Rupert,Idaho and Mrs. Frances Curry of Williamsville; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Elvins Assembly of God Church with burial in the Dexter Cemetery under the direction of Caldwell Funeral Home of Flat River. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEATH, Roy Roy A. Heath, 80, Broseley, died Saturday afternoon, at his home after a long illness. Heath was born in Keenes, Ill., on May 24, 1884, and came to the county in his youth. He was a member of the Black River General Baptist Church, near Broseley. Survivors include his widow. Audria, five boys and a girl, and several grandchildren. Services were held at the Black River Church on Monday, with the Rev. Oden Coats and the Rev. Wayne Wagster officiating. Burial was in the Brown Cemetery. Aaron Bryan Buck, 23 year-old farmer who resided on Route 2, Broseley, died at the Doctors Hospital at noon yesterday following an illness of five months duration. Born at Wardell October 12, 1925, he was married to the former Sylvia Lowrey at Portageville October 9, 1943. He had resided in the county five years and was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bryan Eugene of Arnold, MO., and Ronald Lee Buck at home; two daughters, Mrs. Marsha Kammarer of Marshfield, MO., and Mrs. Sandra Vangarder of Duluth; five grandchildren; four brothers, Chruchhill of Naylor, Woodrow of St. Louis, Frank of Vasalia,CA., and Paul of Des Peres, MO., and a sister, Mrs. Ida Miller of Wardell. The Rev. John R. Owens will officiate at services to be held at the White Funeral Home Chapel in Fisk at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon with burial in the Stanfield Cemetery near Clarkton. Visitation at the chapel starts at 4 this afternoon. He had resided in this county most of his life. Born Feb. 18, 1885. he married to Ann Moore in Butler county, Aug. 6, 1933. He leaves the widow; four sons, William, Jesse, Jackie and Randal Lynn Pipkins; five daughters, Imogene Bostick of St. Louis; Bertis Coleman of DeSoto, Della Mae Blodgett of Granite City, Francis DePriest of St. Louis and Norma Stigell of Granite City. the body was taken to White Funeral Home pending completion of funeral plans. Petty has lived in Farmington the past few years. The body will be at the Miller Funeral Home in Farmington. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Gladys Turnbaugh of Piedmont and two brothers, Jack and Homer of St. Louis. The Rev. Oden Coates will officiate at the funeral. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BATES, Horace Horace Bates, 74-year-old live-long Butler County resident died of a heard attack July 1 at his home on a farm near Broseley He served 30 years as a Rural Mail Carrier out of the Broeley Post Office, from 1926 to 1956 when he retired. He was born at Broseley and moved to Poynor in 1912. After serving in the armed forces in World War I. he returned to Broseley. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Broseley. and was active in various civic and service organizations and farmed for a hobby. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Bates; two brothers, Merle E. Bates of Fisk, and A.L. Bates of Risco; five sisters, Dica Patterson of Cushing OK., Julia Ann BAscom of Dexter, Arrenda Wells of Broseley, Nancy Jackson of Dexter, and Esther Hibler of St. Louis. A niece, patsy Cooper Arnold, lived with Mr. and Mrs. Bates, Survivors include several other nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at the White Funeral Home at Fisk on Thursday at 2 p.m., Funeral services will be at the White Funeral Chapel on Saturday at 2 p.m. (Photo) (hand written 1969) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BOOK, Mary Miss Mary Gladys Book, a 56-year-old resident of Fisk died yesterday at her home. A life-long resident of Butler County, Miss Book was born October 8, 1911. She is survived by her mother , Mrs. Bessie Book of Fisk; a brother, Loyd Book of Fisk and three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Mondy of Broseley, Mrs. Geneva Funck of St. Charles and Mrs. Mina Camilleri of Mobile, Ala. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by White Funeral Home. (hand written died April 7th, 1968) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TROUT, Clint Clint Trout, Jr., 29-year-old farmer of Route 1, Fisk, died Thursday in St. Joseph Hospital, Kirkwood, of injuries received in an automobile accident. Born Nov. 30, 1936, in Fisk, he had been a resident of the community all of his life. He attended Broseley High School and was married Nov. 9, 1957 to the former Miss Sue Pierce at Broseley. In addition to his wife, he leaves one daughter, Geana Lynn Trout, of the family home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clint Trout, Sr., Fisk; one brother, Bill Trout, of Poplar Bluff, and his grandmother Mrs. Jacqueline Arnold, Broseley. He had served in the U.S. Army. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Broseley High School gymnasium. The Rev. Oden Coats will officiate and burial will be in the Brown Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Whites' Funeral Home, Fisk. (hand written died Jan 20, 1966) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MILLER, Debra Services for Debra jean Miller, eight year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Miller, Route 1 of Fisk, who died from injuries received Thursday when struck by a car leaving a school bus, will be held at 2 tomorrow afternoon in the Ash Hill General Baptist Church. The Rev. W.T. White will officiate and burial will be in the Shain Memorial Cemetery under the direction of White's Funeral Home. She was born March 7 1953 in Butler County and was a third grade student at Fisk. Surviving are the parents; two brothers, Larry Dale and Darrell Wayne; three sisters, CArolyn Sue, Sandra Kay and Karen Jane and two grandmothers, Mrs. Ruth Landrum of Fisk and Mrs Maudie Reeder of Poplar Bluff. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPEIDEL, Francis Mrs. Francis Speidel, of Poplar Bluff died at Firmin-Desloge Hospital in St. Louis early last night after being critically ill for several days. She first became ill last May and entered a hospital here, then later going to St. Louis. She returned from the St. Louis hospital August 6 last year and resumed her work with the Welfare office until Feb. 6 of this year. Her health became such she had to return to the hospital. Mrs. Speidel was born March 9, 1900, on Route 2, Poplar bluff, the daughter of the late Dennis O. Donovan. Her husband, Robert Speidel, died in 1946. Her home was at 626 Kinzer. She leaves three sons, Edward of St. Louis, Dennis of California and Frank of St. Louis; a brother, John Donovan of DeSoto; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Epps of Poplar Bluff, Mrs. Jane Walls of St. Louis and Mrs. Harold Walton of Seattle. Funeral services will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 9 tomorrow morning with the Rt. Rev. Daniel Daly in charge. Burial will be in the catholic Cemetery. Rosary services will be at the Frank-Cotrell funeral parlors tonight at 8:15, Members of the family say they would appreciate memorial to the cancer fund in lieu of flowers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
