Wilton, in; Effingham County Aug. 7, 1861. They moved to Butler County about 1882.  Upon enlistment into the 11th Illinois Infantry Company E, John was age 21, 5'9", dark complexion, dark hair, dark eyes, born Fayette County Ill, occupation farmer. The Government Pension Record's of April 13, 1892, War Dept. Record and Pension Division, Washington DC. Commisioner of Pensions reports: John Martin Burket, Pvt. Co E 11 Ill Infantry enrolled Sept. 30, 1861 for three months.  Enrolled Dec. 31, 1861 for 3 years in Edgewood ILL.  Mustered Out Sept. 29, 1864. Reenlisted Co. D Regt. US Veterans Volunteer Infantry.  John was honorably discharge, Sept. 1865: at either White River Ark. or Birds Point, Mo. John was wounded in action. The wound, was a gunshot in face. The injury, was below right eye in a scirmish at Fort Donelson, TN.; Feb. 15, 1862.  The records show; John stated his only living child in 1898 was Mollie Burkett Humphries, wife of Ike Humphries, of Butler County. At the time John made this statement, he was living in their household. His deceased children: William Burkett, And John Burkett.  Last page of John's pension affidavit states: John Martin Burkett born 1841, died Poplar Bluff, Mo on Dec. 14, 1902  His pension pay rate at time of death was $6.00 a month. Some of the names of Butler Countians who signed affidavits to the effects that these were true statements:  Ike Humphries, W. E. Hogue or Hagur, G. Hill, Samuel M. Phillips, John W. Hicks, Charles Agard, B. F. Turner, David C. Burton/Bunton, and E. D. Pruitt.
