Carroll County, Missouri Obituary - Bates, S.N. d. October 31, 1936 Source: S.N. BATES DIES SATURDAY Had Been in Business Here For a Number of Years. S.N. Bates, who returned the first of last week from a Brookfield hospital, passed away at his home Saturday, October 31, at 2:00 o'clock. Mr. Bates had been able to be at his work until he was taken ill a short time ago. His lowered vitality made it impossible to combat the recent illness. Everything possible was done to aid him but he quietly passed away. Samuel Nelson Bates, the son of Frances and Sarah Bates, was born August 18, 1857, in Wapalow County, Iowa, and passed away at his home in Hale, Saturday, October 31, 1936, being at the time of his death 79 years, 2 months, and 13 days old. During boyhood their family moved to Bedford. On October 14, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Lillie Schultz. They made their home in Bedford, until the year of 1900, then moved to Baker County, Oregon, for two years, then they returned to Hale, where they have remained since. Mr. Bates spent the most of his life at the blacksmith and wood working trade. He was one of the really substantial citizens of Hale. Not outstanding as a leader in affairs but humbly doing his share as an upright citizen, a dependable neighbor, and a loyal friend. He knew no enemies. The sorrow of the immediate family is shared by all those who knew him.
