Rockbridge VA newspaper July 1880
Died at Carrollton MO, July 15th 1880, in the 58th year of his age, Mr. James 
W. Buchanan.  Mr. Buchanan was a native of Rockbridge and moved to 
Missouri about 25 years ago.  The Carrollton Democrat in announcing his death 
says: "But few men have lived or died in Carrollton who were more universally 
respected than the deceased.  Removing from Virginia to Carroll county about 25 
years ago, and having occupied several public positions, he had an extensive 
acquaintance, and noneknew him but to admire him.  His sterling character, his 
love of the right and hatred of the wrong, made him friends wherever he went, 
and in both his native State and adopted home the strongest testimonials of 
esteem and appreciation have been tendered and received."

Obituary found in Welch Family Bible.  Mr. Buchanan was married to Sarah 
Frances Jane Welch.
