Carroll County, Missouri Obituary - Spicer, W. H. d. April 24, 1947 Source: TWO DIE FROM HIGHWAY CRASH W. H. Spicer and Roy Standley Fatally Injured When Car Crashes Into Bridge Abutment Early Last Thursday Morning Four Hale citizens were in a motor car accident early Thursday morning of last week that resulted in the death of two of them, Roy Standley dying a short time after entering the Chillicothe hospital and W. H. Spicer passing away at 11:00 o'clock Friday night at the same hospital. Norton and Allen Burnett, who were in the back seat of the car, were also brought to the same hospital where it was found that Allen had a skull fracture, concussion and a broken nose but no internal injuries were discovered. Norton Burnett suffered fractures of the upper and lower jaws but no internal injuries. The fractured jaws were set at the hospital Friday afternoon and placed in casts. Allen Burnett was taken to the Research hospital in Kansas City, Friday afternoon and was operated on at 10:00 o'clock that night to relieve a bone pressure on the brain, he withstood the operation in good shape and is expected to make it alright. In addition to the injuries mentioned above both the Burnett boys received severe cuts and bruises. Roy Standley was badly crushed in body and limbs and lived only a short time after reaching the hospital. Funeral services were held at the Slater Chapel in Hale on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. His obituary is in another column on this page. W. H. Spicer received a broken hip, broken left arm, several broken fingers, possibly a fractured pelvis and internal injuries. His recover was considered doubtful from the first and the best medical skill proved of no avail. Mr. Spicer was one of Hale's most progressive merchants and operated a grocery store here and also one at Tina. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Tom Cossairt were held at the Slater Chapel at 1:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Another service was held at Lathrop later in the afternoon and burial was made in the Lathrop cemetery. We were unable to obtain the obituary for publication this week but will endeavor to have it next week. The cause of the accident may never be determined but the car, a 1938 Chrysler sedan, struck the abutment on the bridge a short distance north of the Hale junction on Highway 65 and from the fact that the crash occurred on the wrong side of the road it is thought that Spicer had pulled over to the left preparatory to making the east turn toward Hale at the junction ahead and from some unknown cause lost control of the car and it crashed into the abutment. The time of the crash can only be set approximately at sometime between 1:30 and 2:00 o'clock Thursday morning. The details of finding the injured persons and summoning aid are somewhat vague to us bit it appears that two young Carrollton me, Eugene Liller and Bill Blair, were the first to discover the accident and notified the State Patrol and summoned Dr. Matheny of Tina who made record time in getting to the scene. Liller and Blair then took Allen Burnett and Roy Standley in their car to the Chillicothe hospital and sent an ambulance to pick up Norton Burnett and Spicer and bring them in to the hospital. The car was towed into Chillicothe by Lionberger's wrecker but it is almost a total wreck, the abutment being hit with such force that it demolished the front end of the car, pushed the motor back into the car and the steering wheel was forced upward nearly to the top of the car. ---------------------------------------------------------- File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Vicki L.
