June 22, 1936 Source: Missouri Daily Democrat Carrollton, MO Tuesday 23 June 1936 Wheeler, Joseph May - Obit Broken Neck Proves Fatal Joseph May Wheeler Succumbs To Injuries Received in Accident Sunday Joseph May Wheeler died at the Atwood hospital in Carrollton, Monday nite at 6:30. Death came to him as a result of a broken neck suffered in an accident at his home south of Wakenda, Sunday evening, June 21 about 7:30. Wheeler and his family had spent the day with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Wheeler, near Wakenda. They had returned home in the conveyance - a wayon drawn by two mules purchased under the rehabilitation plan of the federal government. All passengers had departed from the wagon and young Wheeler was in the act of unhitching the mules from the conveyance. He had unhooked one mule and reached across the wagon tongue for the purpose of releasing the other mule when the team started forwarded. The wagon passed over Wheeler's body. He was turned in such a position that the neck was broken and the spinal cord severed. The injured man was brought to Carrollton immediately where the medical examination disclosed the severe injury. Recovery was despaired of at that time and the end did not come unexpected. Joseph May Wheeler was born 8 May 1907 in Crawford County, Kansas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Wheeler. When he was two years of age the family returned to Carroll county and located on a farm near Wakenda. He was educated in the Walnut Grove rural school. He was married to Wilhemina Burgaman. To this union the following children were born who survive the passing: Josephine, age 8; Helen, age 7; Billy Joe, age 5; Jackie Lee, age 3. His first wife died 16 April 1933. Following the death of his wife he married to Margaret Mills. One daughter was born to this union, Wilma May, who died at the age of three weeks. Besides the children and widow, he is survived by his parents and the following brothers and sisters: George, Warren, Daniel, Levi Jr. all of this county; Louis Matilda, Ethel who was the wife of Raymond Brotherton, Christina who was the wife of Orville Cowick, Sylvia who was the wife of Arley Brotherton, Daisy who was the wife of Eunice Staton, Dorothy and Mary of the home. The sisters also reside in the county. Young Wheeler was a member of the Church of Christ. He became identified with that church early in life. Funeral services in his memory will be held from the Baptist church in Wakenda, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00, conducted by Rev. Hayman of Richmond.
