Thomas Cemetery/Simpson Burial Ground, Cass County, Missouri Located just off Highway 7 approximately 3 miles south of Pleasant Hill This cemetery is located in the middle of a wheat field owned by Bill Waugh who was kind enough to allow our family access to the cemetery to clean out all the weeds and brush. The land used to be owned by Thomas Thomas who is buried in the cemetery. Directions: Take Hwy 7 south out of Pleasant Hill, MO about 3 miles. Turn right on the gravel drive up the hill just past the Pumpkin Patch and Christmas Tree Farm. Follow drive past house, through fence, across creek and up to field. Cemetery is located in the middle of the field beneath the tall trees. Please ask permission of the land owner, Bill Waugh, before proceeding to cemetery. I have pictures of all of the headstones and the condition of the cemetery before and after we cleared the brush. If you would like me to email you pictures, please contact me at and include "Thomas Cemetery" in the Subject line so I know it is not junk mail. Index of Headstones: Thomas H. Doores Elizabeth D. Simpson Born July 29, 1832 Died Feb 8, 1892 Inscription: Unreadable It is believed that the following people may be buried in this cemetery, however no headstones were discovered. The technique of "witching" or "dousing" was used to locate these possible graves. George W. Simpson - Died May 31, 1894; Son of Samuel and Sarah Simpson Samuel Simpson, Jr. - Born Mar 11, 1863, Died Jan 1, 1903; Son of Samuel and Sarah Simpson Samuel M. Simpson - Born May, 1829, Died June 13, 1913; Husband of Sarah (Thomas) Simpson By this same "witching" technique, 7 additional graves were "discovered" and may reside inside this cemetery. Five appear to be children, including 2 male preemies buried in the corners, 1 unknown infant male, unknown girl probably aged 6-10 years, and 1 unknown male probably 2 years old. The other 2 graves appear to be of adults. By this same technique, several slave graves just outside the fence of this cemetery appear to have been located. This is a controversial technique and has its skeptics so it is up to you to chose to accept it or not. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
