JOHN M. DUNN, a worthy representative of an old and respected family of
Chariton county, and a Gentleman of exemplary character and strict
integrity, was born in Salisbury township, November 18, 1864.  Robert Dunn,
the grandfather, was born in Halifax county, Va., April 6, 1803.  In 1828
he settled in Kentucky and there met and married Miss Jane Hart, also of
Virginia.  In '31 they emigrated to Howard county, Mo., and seven years
later to Chariton county, where they resided
until their death. To them were born 8 children, John D., Father of our
subject, being the eldest.  He was born in Lincoln Co. Kentucky, in '31.
September 13, 1853 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha J., daughter of
Alton and Mary A. (Wasson) Freeman, of this county, but formerly of
Kentucky. They were the parents of three children, namely, James E.;
Mary E., now Mrs. F. P. Twyman, and John M., our subject.  The death of
the father occurred August 2, 1885.  Mrs. Dunn now resides in Salisbury,
and is a lady of culture and refinement, with a large circle of
acquaintances. Reared upon the farm, the boyhood days of our subject were
not unlike those of the farmer lad. Completing the course of the common
schools, in 1883-4 he attended the State Normal at
Kirksville, Mo.  Returning home he taught four terms of school, giving
excellent satisfaction.  In 1888, he located in Salisbury and for two years
engaged in  the grocery business, meeting with a reasonable degree of
success.  At present he is engaged in the insurance business and holds the
position of city collector.  On March 28, 1895, he was united in marriage
with Miss Eva G. Morehead, one of Salisbury's most intellectual and
accomplished ladies and a daughter of Mrs. Amanda Morehead, well and
favorably known in this city.  Socially, Mr. Dunn is an enthusiastic
member of the Knights of Pythias order.  Politically he affiliates with the
democratic party. Religiously he and his wife are consisted members and
active workers of the Methodist church.
