Clay was born in Kentucky, March 11, 1834, and was brought to this part of Missouri the same year. Mr. Clay is consequently for all practical purpose a born Missourian. He has taken active part and interest in the development of the county through his whole life. He has endured all the privations and hardships of early pioneer life and as a reward he is now enjoying the ease and comforts of the fruits of his endeavors. Mr. Clay was married November 1, 1857, to Miss Emily Kell. To them were born seven children, one son and six daughters, all of whom are living. The son, Marion L. Clay, is a graduate of the Dixon, Ill., College, and is now taking the law course at the Columbia University. There is no man in the township of Jackson more respected or more thought of than Samuel P. Clay.
