S. Tinsley, Sr., who resided on section 35, Madison Township, is perhaps the only man now living in Clark County, Missouri, who was a voter when the county was organized. Mr. Tinsley was born in Shelby County, Kentucky in 1809, of good old Virginia stock. He came to Clark County about 1830 and settled at what is now St. Francisville. He traveled from Kentucky horseback. Mr. Tinsley shared in all the vicissitude of early pioneer life, sometimes engaged in merchandising, sometimes justice of the peace, sometimes postmaster, but always going back to his natural occupation of farming. In 1840 he was Married to Miss Daggs. They did not take their wedding journey until 1855, but in the summer of that year they went in a horse and buggy all the way to Kentucky and back. So far as is known Mr. Tinsley started the first store at what is now Luray, shortly after he came to Clark County, probably in 1834. The county was then a wilderness abounding in game. Mr. Tinsley remembers that one day near the old Hearald Thicket he killed three deer without moving from the spot. Wolves were plenty and the early settlers had great sport organizing wolf hunts. One of the earliest postoffices in the county was “Sugar Creek” and Mr. Tinsley was the first postmaster, getting his commission from President Fillmore. The office was in the building now occupied by Mr. Tinsley as a home. In 1844 Mr. Tinsley was elected justice of the peace and held said office until he moved from near Luray to his present home. His new neighbors elected him to the same office on several occasion until 1860. Mr. Tinsley has always been a sturdy, active man and has seen much of life. He has reared a large family of children who have grown up hardy upright men and women. He has been successful in this world’s affairs and is spending his declining years in peace and quiet at the old homestead surrounded by his family and respected by the whole community.
