Some the marriages did not occur in Clay County. The date of publication is shown prior to the listed item(s). Jan 5, 1877: Married, in this city on Thursday eve. 28th, by Reverend H. M. Richardson; Mr. C.M. Towne, of Iowa, to Miss Lutie Murray, daughter of the late E.D. Murray, of Liberty. Cake received. May no rude cares disturb the flow Of their united love But may their lives here below Be liked to God – all love. Married Dec. 24th, 1876, at the residence of the bride’s father, two miles north of Missouri City, Mr. John McKarlin, of Missouri City, to Miss Eugene Shackelford, by R.G.Gilmer, Esq. Jan 12, 1877: Mr. John C. Devers, of Clay county, and Miss Josephine E. Holt, of Clinton county, were married on the 5th inst. Very Extraordinary Marriage – Lexington, KY., witnessed a remarkable marriage a short time since. Dr. J.G. Chinn led to the alter Mrs. Catharine Lawson, the former a resident of Lexington and the latter of Fayette county. The groom was of the ripe but modest age of 80 years, and looked as vigorous as most men of sixty. The lady will be 90 years of age on the first day of May next. Dr. Chinn was a soldier in the war of 1812. On the 31st ult., Mr. James B. Henderson, of Kearney, was married to Miss Lue Davis. Why, James, what do you mean? However, your head is level. Much joy. Mr. Geo. Gillwater and Miss Anna Harris were married in this county on the 7th inst. Jan 26, 1877: Mr. S. Cutler and Miss Mollie Anthony, of Holt, were married on the 16th inst. Married, in this county on the 19th, Mr. Leonidas Levell to Miss Flora J. Moore. Feb 2, 1877: Married Jan. 28th, 1877, by Justice S.H. Holmes, Mr. George McKarnin to Miss Ann E. Smith, Daughter of Philip Smith, all of Clay. Also, on same day, by same, Mr. Jas. H. Brown, to Miss Evaline A. Ballew, all of Clay. Feb 16, 1877: Married at the residence of the bride’s father on Wednesday, the 7th inst., by Rev. A.J. Emerson, Mr. Joseph S. Pickett, of Sumner co., Kas., to Miss Sallie E. Marr, daughter of J.C. Marr, of Clay co. Mar 2, 1877: Married – Lentz – Moore. – Wednesday eve., Feb. 28th, 1877, by H.B. Turner, at the residence of Mr. J.R. Hicks, Liberty, Mo., Mr. A.M. Lentz to Miss Annie Moore. Married, Feb. 22, 1877, by Elder Wm. Warren, Mr. James W. Moore, of Daviess co., to Miss America W. Williams, of Clay. Also, by the same, at the same time, Mr. Robert R. Peters, to Miss Mary E. Rothwell, Mr. W.E. Rust and Miss Eugenia S. Leavell, daughter of Judge L.W. Leavell, all of Clay co. From Pleasant Grove: On Tuesday Feb. 27th, Mr. William Rust, (proving himself a victim to “cupid’s dart”) led to the hymenial altar the beautiful and accomplished Miss Linnie Leavell. Much happiness. Mar 23, 1877: Married, at the residence of the bride’s father, near this city, on the evening of the 20th inst., by Rev. H.M. Richardson, Mr. Jas. A. Griffith, Jr., merchant of Liberty, to Miss Louella Mitchell, daughter of Dr. B.R. Mitchell. Attendants – Sumner Park and Miss Almeda Ricketts - Jos. A. Griffith and Miss Sue Williams. Married at the Presbyterian Church in Liberty, Thursday eve., the 22d inst., by Rev. Mr. Maderia, of Kansas City, Mr. Henry E. Roll, of the Great Dry Goods house of Bullene, Moore & Emerys, to Miss Fannie Shrader, of Liberty. Attendants – Mr. Haeslip, of Kansas City and Miss Annie Thompson, of Liberty – Mr. Jno. T. Donalson, of Liberty and Miss Eva Grant, of Kansas City – Mr. W.H. Newlee, of Liberty and Miss Jennie Marshall, of Platte City. Married, at the residence of bride’s mother in Liberty, on Thursday eve., March 22, by Rev. H.A. Bourland, of Kansas City, Rev. John A. Beagle, of the M.E. Church South, to Miss Hannah Waples, daughter of the late A.C. Waples. Mar 30, 1877: Married, March 22d, 1877, at the bride’s residence, by Rev. W.T. Campbell, Mr. J.C. Rice and Mrs. Susan A. Judy, all of Clay co. Apr 6, 1877: Married, March 27th, 1877, at the residence of the bride’s father, by Rev. W.T. Campbell, Mr. Chas. S. Major and Miss Lizzie Henderson, all of Clay co. Married, on the 29th March, 1877, by Rev. H.M. Richardson, Mr. Nathan B. Step and Miss Margaret Ann Cundiff, all of Clay co. Apr 27, 1877: Providence Scraps: Cupid the little heart-rending god, has again been at his tricks. Proof. At the residence of the bride’s mother on Tuesday evening the 19th inst., by Rev. Prof. A.J. Emerson, Mr. William Dickerson, and Miss Ruth Francis were married. On the same evening at the residence of the brides father (R.T. Stevenson) by the Rev. Robt. Jones, Mr. G.T. Warren and Miss Alice Stevenson. May joy, peace and prosperity attend the wedded life of all of them. Married, at Rocheport, on the 17th April, by Rev. Mr. White, Mr. James T. Ruenzi, of Fayette, to Miss Katie Singleton, of Columbia. A bit of a “runaway match.” May 4, 1877: Married, in this county on the 10th Feb., Mr. Thomas Carbon and Miss Miller Wade – all of Clay. May 11, 1877: Mr. E.M. Gates and Miss Fanny Landers were married in this city the other day. The groom is confined in jail on some charge, and during the ceremony he stood inside the jail door and she on the outside, and when over she retired to her mother’s. Her is romance for you. Jun 8 1877: The Kansas City Journal says that Hon. Henry Smith, of Topeka, was married in that place to Miss Verina Courtney of Liberty – Rev. Mr. Maderia officiating. Married, on the 31st ult., by Elder Wm. Warren, at the bride’s father’s, Mr. Thomas J. Harris, to Miss Lucy A. Nicholson, all of Clay co. Mr. Wash Adams, of Kansas City, and Miss Ella B. Lincoln, of Clinton county, were married on Tuesday eve. The bride is the daughter of Mr. John K. Lincoln. Jun 15, 1877: From Missouri City: Married at the residence of James Yates, 2 ˝ miles east of this place, by R.G. Gilmer, Esq., Mr. William H.H. Barns, to Miss Anna J. Smith, on the 31st May, 1877. Also, by same, at residence of the bride, one mile east Howdyshell Bridge, Mr. James Buist, to Mrs. Mary E. Harris, on June 7th, 1877. Jun 29, 1877: Married, by Elder James Via, on the evening of the 14th of June, 1877, at the residence of the bride’s mother, Mr. Griffin Bandy to Miss Harriett A. Estes – all of Clay County. Attendants – Mr. William H. Thomason and Miss Alice Estes. Jul 13, 1877: Married, on the 7th, by Rev. Daniel Patton, Mr. John Moore and Miss Mollie Davidson, all of Clay. Aug 10, 1877: Married, at the residence of the bride’s father, on Wednesday evening, August 1st, 1877, by Elder Wm. Warren, Mr. Archibald Dever, to Miss Arthusia Peters, all of Clay County. Aug 17, 1877: Married, at the Thompson House in this city, on the 15th inst., by Elder A.B. Jones, Mr. J.C. Purl, of Kingston, Kansas, to Miss Callie C. Burruss, of same place. Good luck, to Mr. Purl. Sep 7, 1877: Married in this county on the 4th inst., by Elder A.B. Jones, Mr. John W. Tilman and Miss Maggie Wilkerson – all of Clay county. Married, in Clay co., Mo., at the residence of Epohraim Smith the brides’ father, by Rev. T.W. Todd, Miss Henrietta Smith to Mr. James Cain. Married at the Court House in Liberty, Clay co., Mo., by Judge Saml. H. Holmes, J.C. Tracy and Mrs. Sadie J. Van Ostram. The ceremony was one of considerable moment, rendered so, by the very brief, but decidedly eloquent services of the Judge in his confirmation of the moral edict, “That which, God has put together let no man, put asunder,” as well as that, the services were performed in another apartment of the building, from the court room, in which had congregated near an hundred uninvited spectators, much to their chagrin. The occasion, however, was honored with the Sheriff, Co. Treasurer, and ex-confederate captain, two attorneys, and four or five of Liberty’s most honorable and trustworthy citizens. The pleasant reminiscence of the event was however overshadowed by some disappointment, occasioned by the absence of the smiling countenance of Capt. James Ford, who was expected to have honored the happy couple by his presence. Congratulations were extended, afterwards, the guests were left to their own volition. Binghamville Items: Miss Lydia Poe was led to the hymenial altar a few evenings ago, by Mr. Greenberry Warren. He was not a goose if he was green. Rev. M. Warren, Officiating. Sep 14, 1877: Providence News: Our handsome bachelor friend “Bud” Tillman has at last struck pure gold, for he on Tuesday the 4th inst., was married to Miss Maggie Wilkerson the amiable daughter of Mat Wilkerson. Success to your “Bud,” for you deserve a good wife after waiting so long. But why in the nation didn’t you ax me? Married, near Smithville, Aug. 30th, by Elder G.B. Waller, Mr. Edgar Spratt and Miss Sibbie Thatcher. Married, near New Market, Platte co., Sept. 5th, Mr. Eli Owens to Miss Mary Middleton, all of Platte. Married, on the 6th inst., by Rev. H.M. Richardson, Mr. Melvin M. Rice and Miss Helen Buster, daughter of Mr. C.W. Buster. Married at same time and place, by same, Mr. Edward Crowley and Miss Anna Hardwick, all of Clay. Attendants- G.W. Ammons and Miss Addie Dawson, W. Evans and Miss Lucy Buster. The weddings took place at the residence of Mr. C.W. Buster, and was a brilliant affair. We wish the newly married all the happiness this world can give, and that of the next. Silver dollar received. Fritzlen and Miss Fannie Hymer, all of Clay. “May love his golden chain entwine, Forever round these happy hearts; May life to them be hope divine, And sweetest faith that God imparts.” Married, on the 19th inst., by Elder L.B. Wright, Mr. J.H. Hymer and Miss Annie Vandyke, both of Clay. Married, near Missouri City, on the 23d inst., Mr. J.H. Mereness and Miss Ann Pigg. The Tribune’s best wish for happiness and prosperity. Married near Mo. City, on the 14th inst., by Rev. Mr. Carter, Mr. Richard Clevenger to Miss Maggie Gill, all of this county. Oct 5, 1877: Married, Sept 30th, near Mt. Olivet, Clay county, at the residence of John Brooks, Esq., by Elder W.H. Shannon, Mr. D.B.W. Ballard, of Leavenworth County, Kansas, to Mrs. Sarah H. Todhunter, of Clay co., Mo. Married, at the Christian church, in Lexington, Mo., on the 26th ult., by Elder Hughes, Mr. D.H. Craig, of Linneus, Mo., and Miss Laura S. Hollis, of the former place. Attendants – Miss Tillie Hollis, Miss Susie Willis, of Independence, Hon. H. H. Craig, of Kansas City, and Mr. Benj. Craig, of Linneus. Married, at the residence of the bride’s father, by the Rev. John A. Beagle, Mr. James Wallwork to Miss Annie Harding, all of Clay county. Married, near Holt, on the 27th ult., by Rev. Mr. Campbell, Mr. Elias Albright to Mrs. Bettie Courtney. Oct 12, 1877: Married, Sept. 11, 1877, at the Planter’s House, in Holt, Mr. Isaac Williams and Miss Laura Byram, by Rev. W.T. Campbell, all of Clay. Married, in ;this city on the 8th inst., at the residence of Judge Jones, by Elder Longan, Mr. Sanford Roush to Miss Lizzie Barkley – all of Liberty. Married, by Elder James Via, at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. Wyat Wills, on the 1st Oct., 1877, Mr. I.B. Ellis, of Barren co., Ky., to Miss Octavia Wills, of Clay co., Mo. Attendants – Miss Mary Land with Miss Addie Searcy; Mr. Oscar Davidson with Miss Florence Thompson; Mr. Gus Davidson with Miss Fannie Reynolds. Oct 26, 1877: Col Polk married a daughter of Jabez Smith of Jackson county. – Columbia Statesman. Mistake. Col. Polk married the young widow of Jabez Smith. Married in Platte City on the 18th inst., by Elder Smith, Mr. T.L. Thomas and Miss LeVerrier Johnson, daughter of Dr. F.M. Johnson, all of Platte. Married in Platte county on the 10th Oct., by Rev. Father Handley, of Liberty, Mr. Levi Link and Miss Frankie Henry, both of Platte. Married in Smithville, on the 14th inst., by Elder Waller, Mr. Crow and Miss Beauregard. Married near Pratherville, by Elder A.N. Bird, Mr. D.C. Stephenson, of Kansas City, and miss Nannie Wilson. Nov 2, 1877: Every Crow ought to have a mate, you know, and so, Jonnie Crow, invited Miss Belle Boreguard to take a pleasant ride to the thriving town of Smithville, where in the presence of a few select friends they were quietly tied in the holy bonds of wedlock, the Rev. G.B. Waller, in his elegant style, officiating. Now if Johnnie takes the Tribune, he can’t choose but prosper in this world. May a long, successful life attend our young friends. Married, in this city on Tuesday evening the 30th ult., by Rev. W.R. Rothwell, Mr. A.J. Jones, editor of the Columbia (Ky.) Spectator, and Miss M.B. Bryant, daughter of Mr. L.H. Bryant, of this city. Well, who would have thought there was a lady in Liberty that would have married an editor. WE never dreamed of such a thing. The next time we are a widower we will know how to act. Brother Jones, however, knew what he was about, and has carried off one of the handsomest and most intelligent young ladies in Old Clay. Married Wednesday eve. Nov. 14th 1877, by Rev. J.W. Luke, Mr. Nathaniel Herriot and Miss Mary E. Peckover. Nov 23, 1877: An old widower made happy. On Thursday Mr. Mabry Mitchell was married to Mrs. Martha E. Davidson, Eld. Jas. Duvall officiating. The bride is the daughter of the late Jonathan Adkins. The wonder is, how such a little man managed to secure so good-looking and intelligent a lady; but widowers are men of vast resources and know no such word as fail, and hence Mr. M.’s good fortune. We wish the newly married pair much happiness. Married, on Nov. 21st, by Rev. J.P. Foreman, Mr. Geo. T. Dodds and Miss Lou. Snover, both of Thayer, Kansas, at the residence of Mr. Chas. Married on the 15th inst., near Gosneyville, Mr. Joseph Thatcher and Miss Tinnie Hall. Nov 30, 1877: Married near Haynesville, on the 23d inst., Mr. Wm. Albright and Miss Hattie Burris. Married in Clay county on the 18th inst., by Elder Asa N. Bird, Mr. Alexander Peters and Miss Jennis Whiteacre. Dec 7, 1877: Married, in this city on the evening of the 4th inst., by Rev. David Coulter, Mr. John W. Collins and Mrs. Elvina Hathaway, daughter of the late Cyrus Brashear. We wish the newly married couple health, happiness and prosperity. WE have been in the habit of joking the groom about matrimony, and may be, about the lady who is now his bride, but we had no idea either of them ever entertained the subject, and frankly acknowledge that they “took us by storm.” All right – they suit exactly, and we “throw our old shoe after them: for good luck, with the cordial good wishes of the Tribune. Married in Harrodsburgh, KY., on the 27th ult., Dr. E.M. Wiley and Miss Mary Williams. The bride taught in Prof. Jones’ Seminary in Liberty last session. Married, on the 28th Nov., 1877, by N.B. Bush, J.P., at residence of same, Mr. Francis M. Shelton, to Miss Mary M. Groom, daughter of MR. Frank Groom, all of Clay county. Dec 14, 1877: Married, on Thursday evening, Dec. 6th, by Elder Asa N. Bird, Marcellus Thomason, Esq., and Miss Lucy Estes, all of Clay county. Dec 21, 1877: Married on Thursday the 13th inst., by Elder Bird at his residence, Mr. Thos. F. Kidd and Miss Fanny B. Foley.
