Some the marriages did not occur in Clay County. The date of publication is shown prior to the listed item(s). Jan 7, 1881: A Happy Wedding. “Two souls with but a single thought, Two hearts that beat as one.” The most brilliant society event of the winter came off at the Christian church, on the evening of Dec. 23d, when our young friends, Mr. Ed. Berkhead and Miss Katie B. Gordon, made the sacred vow of husband and wife. The rights were solemnized by Eld. Longan, in the presence of more than five hundred friends. The bride was attired in an elegant and costly trosseau. The groom wore the conventional black. The attendants were Miss Jennie Groom and Mr. James Bland; Miss Emma Clay and Mr. Ed. Miller; Miss Lizzie Noble and Mr. Frank Gordon, Jr. The Church was not decorated, nor was there the least attempt at display or ostentation. Its very plainness was an evidence of good taste on the part of those able to have it prepared in costly style. After the ceremony the bridal party and the guests went to the residence of Judge W.F. Gordon, the bride’s father, where congratulations were extended. A splendid repast was partaken of by all, the table being beautifully decorated and well supplied with everything an epicurian taste might suggest. In the hall a large center-table stood, displaying the following nice and valuable presents, with compliments: Elegant Watch and Chain, from the groom. Silver Card Receiver and Boquet Holder, Miss Emma Clay. Chamber Sett, Misses F.L. Gordon and J.A. Bland, Lamp, Miss Lizzie Noble, Rosebud Tea Sett, Mrs. W. Gordon, Pair Perfume Bottles, Misses Annie and Bertha Brining. Toilet Sett, J.D. Thompson; pair of Vases, Miss Eva Bland; Perfume Case and bottles, J.E. Bradley; one dozen silver Knives and Forks, Mrs. A.N. Berkhead; pair of Vases, Charles Mosby; Gold Pen, Wm. H. Brining; pair of Towels, Little Lena; sett of silver Tea Spoons, Miss Ada Mosby; Lace Spread and Pillow Shams, Miss Jennie Groom; Paper Bracket, Miss Isa Oliver; dozen Napkins, Miss Belle Bland; Marseilles Counterpane, Aunt E. Gordon; celluloid Toilet Sett, Mr. A.N. Berkhead; half-dozen Napkins, Mrs. Brining; sett Tea Spoons, Ed. Miller; Linen Towels, Mrs. J. Mosby; Reclining Chair, A.S. Brown; Ottoman, Messrs. McGinniss and A.S. Brown; silver Cream Ladle, Mrs. A.P. Evans; Pin Holder and Pin Cushion, Mr. Hardesty. The next evening a reception was given by Mr. and Mrs. A.N. Berkhead, in their newly-finished residence. The rooms were crowded. The parlor was a picture of grace and female beauty. An excellent supper was served, and after enjoying the kind hospitalities of the evening, the guests took their leave. Ed. is one of our best young men. He is attentive to business, and possesses a strong sense of justice and right. He has chosen for a wife a handsome lady in the city of the handsomest ladies. Their friends wish them all the happiness that fancy has painted or the shadowy light of this life can give, and as they tread the leafy isle of the future, linked hand in hand, may the love of two hearts so fitly united never grow less tender and true, but ever charmed by the magic of their own metal harmonies, may they not forget Him who alike sends the tempest and the elysian breeze; that the home and shrine in and around which their dearest hopes are laid may both be sanctioned by earth with the blessing of heaven. Gray, of Liberty, Missouri – the same occurring at the residence of the bride’s father, Rev. A.W. Chambliss, D.D., in the place last named. We extend to the newly married couple our sincere congratulations – wishing them meanwhile a world of connubial bliss.
