MARRIAGES IN CLAY COUNTY MISSOURI

The following marriages appeared in The Liberty Tribune, Liberty, Clay County, 
Missouri during the year of 1861.  Some the marriages did not occur in Clay 
County.  The date of publication is shown prior to the item(s).

Jan 4, 1861:
In Columbia, on the 13th ult., by Rev. Mr. Jones, Mr. Jas. Richardson, to Mrs. 
Elizabeth Selby, all of Columbia.

Feb 8, 1861:
On the 24th ult., at the residence of the bride, near Liberty, by the Rev. Wm. 
Warren, Mr. R.W. Riggs, of Plattsburg, to Miss Lou. A. Vance, of Clay county.

In Plattsburg, on the 31st ult., by the Rev. Mr. Perkins, Mr. H.H.C. Snail to 
Miss Abby B. Brooks, all of Smithville, Clay county.

On the evening of the 5th inst., by Rev. W.C. McPheeters, Mr. Henry H. Spencer 
of Audrain county, t Miss Eliza C. Trabur, of Clay county.

Mar 1, 1861:
In this city, on the 27th inst., Mr. Joseph Sigement, to Miss Mary McKenna.

Apr 5, 1861:
In this county, on Tuesday the 28th ult., by Eld. Wm. Warren, Mr. John 
Mothershead, to Miss Selestia Gunn, daughter of T.H. Gunn, Esq., all of Clay 
county.

In this county, on the 4th inst., by Elder R.C. Morton, J.B. Jaquith formerly 
of Albion New York, to Miss Margaret A. Sweatnam, of this county.

Apr 19, 1861:
In this county, on the 14th inst., at the residenc eof the bride’s father, by 
Rev. Mr. Tarwater, Mr. R.G. Robertson, to Miss Maddie E. Adkins, daughter of 
Col. D.J. Adkins, all of Clay county.

May 31, 1861:
In Columbia, Mo., on Tuesday, the 21st inst., Col Trigg T. Allen, of Liberty, 
to Miss Mag. F. Duncan, daughter of Dr. Wm. H. Duncan, of the former place.

Jun 7, 1861:
On the 4th inst., by Eld. W.C. Barrett, Mr. P.D. Anderson, to Miss Helen Almy – 
all of Clay county.

Jun 14, 1861:
On Tuesday morning, the 4th inst., at the residence of the bride’s father, by 
the Rev. G.L. Mode, Mr. Percival G. Lowe, of Colorado Territory, to Miss Maggie 
E. Gartin, daughter of A. Gartin, Esq., of Clay county.
May life be sweet as love’s young dream,
When first the mutual faith is plighted,
And bliss in heavenly fullness beam
On these young hearts by love united.

Jun 21, 1861:
On the 20th inst., by the Rev. Wm. Thompson, at the residence of the bride’s 
father, in this county, Wm. R. Bradford, Esq., to Miss Ella T. Pogue, formerly 
of Fayette county, Kentucky.

Jun 12, 1861:
In Huntsville, Mo., on the 29th ult., by Rev. Mr Teboe, Mr. F.H. Calvert, of 
Liberty, Mo., to Miss Bettie Hunt, of the former place. 

Jul 19, 1861:
In this county, on the 4th inst., by Prest. Thompson, Mr. Woodford McQuiddy, to 
Miss Lizzie Griffith, daughter of James A. Griffith, Esq., all of this county.

Aug 2, 1861:
At the residence of the bride’s father, Jos. Bright, Esq., on the 30th of July, 
by the Rev. W.C. McPheeters, Mr. Wm. T. Bishop, of Hannibal, Mo., to Miss 
Maggie A. Bright, of Clay county.
“Her lot in life is fixed in thine,
Its good and ill to share;
And may it ever be her pride
To soothe each sorrow there.
Then take her and may fleeting time,
Make only joys increase,
And may your days glide sweetly on
In happiness and peace.”

Aug 30, 1861:
On the 15th of August, by the Rev. Richard Valentine, at the residence of the 
bride’s father, J.B. Lampton, Esq., of Liberty, Mo., to Miss Annie R. Bashaw, 
daughter of J.W. and Catharine J. Bashaw, of New Castle, Ky.

In this county, at the residence of Col. A.J. Calhoun, by Prest. Thompson, Rev. 
Wm. Tarwater, to Miss Catharine M. Tice, all of Clay county. 

Nov 8, 1861:
In this city on the 31st ult., by Rev. L.M. Lewis, Col. Wm. Dougherty, of 
Nodaway county, to Miss Ann Edwards, daughter of John Edwards, Esq., of this 
city.

Dec 6, 1861:
On Tuesday, December 3d, by the Rev. Henry Hill, Mr. John Robinson, to Miss 
Mary J. Leitch, all of this county.
Oh, take her; but be faithful still,
And may the bridal vow
Be sacred held in after years,
And warmly breathed as now.
Remember ‘tis no common tie
That binds her youthful hearts
Tis one that only truth should weave – 
And only death should part.

Dec 20, 1861:
In Chillicothe, Dec. 9th, by Rev. Wm. T. Ellington, William S. Pullins Esq., of 
Platte county, to Miss Alice Barnes, adopted daughter of Col. Lucian J. Eastin, 
Editor of the Chillicothe “Chronicle.”
