Some the marriages did not occur in Clay County. The date of publication is shown prior to the item(s). Jan 15, 1864: On the 3d inst., at the residence of the bride’s father, near Smithville, Clay County, Mo., by Rev. J.D. Reynerson, Mr. L.P. Proutty, of Leavenworth, Kansas, to Miss Ann E. Owen. On the 31st ult., by Rev. J.D. Reynerson, Mr. Josiah Boston, to Mrs. Mary B. McCommac, all of Leavenworth, Kansas. Jan 22, 1864: In Flemming county, Ky., on the 17th ult., by Rev. T.B. Wiles, at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. Luther M. Strode, (nephew of the late Col. J.M. Strode,) to Miss India Farser, all of Flemming. We wish them a long life – a life of peace and prosperity. May the sunshine of this happiness ne’er be clouded with sorrow and disappointment, and when the sun of this happiness shall have reached the meridian of their matrimonial day, God forbid that the ruthless hand of death should visit their family circle and o’erspread their bright happiness with sorrow and mourning; but may their life flow on smoothly as the little rippling brook that gurgles on until it finally loses itself in the great and might ocean. We think Mr. S. has chosen for his bosom companion one of nature’s sweetest and prettiest flowers. We hope he will be kind, true, gentle and devoted to his lovely bride. We did not attend the wedding party, but we did the “infair” party, and we never witnessed a more brilliant party. May God smile upon the youthful couple, is our prayer. Carrie S.S. Accompanying the above marriage and notice we received $1 “greenback” and a slice of cake, for which we return our thanks. Feb 12, 1864: In this county, on the 28th ultimo, by President Thompson, Mr. James N. Grooms, to Miss Maria J. Alder. Mar 4, 1864: In this city on the morning of the 1st instant, at the residence of the bride’s father, by President Thompson, Daniel Huff, Esq., of Knoxville, Tenn., to Miss Mollie C. Murray, of this place. So were united by the rosy bonds of love in holy wedlock two young hearts in all the freshness and truth of early youth. May joy go with them everywhere, and may their future lengthen out, and ever be bright and fair as the morn of their union. They met in the voyage of life, and like ships upon the broad ocean sailing, their hearts to each other spoke. A gay and brilliant assemblage of friends saw them plight their mutual faith at the altar. Many were the congratulations and good wishes tendered the happy pair, and truthfully may it be said, that they all came from lips sincere. The newly- wedded couple tarried with us but briefly – barely ‘till the wine had circled, the jest for a moment sparkled, and the cake had been tasted, and then, amid the kind adieus of all, departed for a distant home. L. Mar 18, 1864: In this city, on Thursday, the 10th inst., by President Thompson, James C. Murray, Esq., to Miss Adelaide M. Parker. All the stars of Heaven, The deep blue noon of night, lit by an orb Which looks a spirit, or a spirit’s world The hues of twilight. The sun’s gorgeous coming His setting indescribable, which fills My eyes with pleasant tears, as I behold Him sink, and feel my heart float softly with him Along that western Paradise of clouds The forest shade – the green bough – the birds voice The vespers birds which seem to sing of love, And mingles with the soar of cherubim, As the day closes o’er Eden’s walls; All these are nothing – to loving hearts United forever in the bonds of matrimony. May their happiness be lasting and unalloyed, Their lives long and much enjoyed. MOSE. Apr 1, 1864: In Clinton county, on Tuesday, the 22d ult., by Preston Aker, Preacher of the Gospel, Mr. Isham M. Aug 19, 1864: Five Days, or the Uncertainty of Human Affairs in North-west Mo. On Sabbath last – the 7th – Mr. Columbus Whitlock, a quiet and peaceable citize of this county, formerly in service in the E.M.M., being engaged to be married at 3 o’clock of that day, to Miss Angeline J. Cox, of Platte county, left his residence for that purpose, in company with his sister-in-law; and having met the minister who was to marry him, and other friends – but from some cause he was unavoidably delayed, so that he did not arrive at the residence of Mr. Cox until ten minutes past 5 o’clock. The company had given him out, and had eaten supper and started home; his appearance however, set things right again, and he was married at twenty minutes after 5 o’clock. As he and his lady were going home the next day, they were taken prisoners by bushwhackers, but released soon after. On Wednesday morning he started to Smithville for a physician for his mother, and was taken prisoner again by the bushwhackers, detained awhile and then shot with two or three balls, causing immediate death. He was found and taken to Smithville, and on the following day he was conveyed by a procession of ladies and an escort of soldiers to the graveyard at Mrs. Rollins’ where he was placed in his final resting place. He leave his young widow together with three small children (by a former wife) to mourn his loss – his sad untimely fate. Thus it is with North-West Missouri. Unhappy people!
