Reid rreid21@cox.net July 22, 2007, 4:17 pm Liberty Weekly Tribune January 18, 1878 Mr. Editor: - Holidays are over Business of all kinds rather dull since Christmas. People may cry - "ice! ice!" but there is no ice. Last week was a serious time for turkeys; cause - special dinners for special friends. Our community is enjoying good health. Last week, the week of prayer, was observed by our christian brethren. It would, no doubt, be advisable for all to turn a new leaf at the beginning of the New Year. On, on, foreveron! The new year's come, the old one's gone, Relentless time! O, stop in your flight, And tarry with me for a while to-night, I'd ask thee one thing - can you tell - Have I improved thy moments well? Alas! how mny times, I fear - We've grieved thee in the bygone year. O, may we all while life is given, Improve out time - prepare for Heaven A writing school is in progress at this place, Mr. L. Wyatt, teacher. Our young folks will, no doubt, improve greatly in this useful art, since Mr. Wyatt comes recommended as a first class teacher. Last Friday eve, we had the pleasure of attending a social gathering at the splendid residence of Mr. Daniel Bello, about two miles north of town. Mr. editor what a pity you are not a young man for you certainly missed a treat by not being present. There was beauty all around. Cheerfulness beamed from every eye. In due time supper was announced. Ten couples were called for. This was repeated, I think, four times, so you have an idea of the number present. An excellent supper it was - good enough for the Queen of England. - Missouri City was represented by the following young ladies; Misses R. Annie Winfrey, Mollie Robertson, Bettie Robertson, Dixie Robertson, Emma Mitchell, Fannie Reed, Fannie Mitchell, Mollie Gilmer, Alice Clanton and Enna Metchell. About midnight, the crowd dispersed, highly delighted with their evening's pastime. A jest and I'll close. Two young merchants and a clerk of this place accompanied three young ladies to the social gathering. Conveyance - a spring wagon. Driver - one of the young merchants. Now there is a stump in the road a little more than half way between this and Mr. Bell's. Coming home this stump was invisible (so says the merchant; perhaps he was not looking for stumps). The horses are in a lively trot. All are merry and having a jolly time -- when lo! did you ever! With a terrible bump The wheel finds the stump Out they fall kerlump. One fearful crash! The wheel went all to smash Result: No one seriously hurt, a broken wheel and a walk to the city. Amicus.
