Reid rreid21@cox.net September 8, 2007, 5:50 pm The Liberty Tribune, Mar 8, 1861 The Liberty Tribune, Mar 8, 1861: The Late Hon. Jas. M. Hughes. Our earliest recollections of Clay county, are associated with the name of this gentleman, who recently departed this life in Jefferson City; and though standing wide apart in political matters, we have ever regarded him as a high minded and honorable gentleman; of noble impulses and strong attachments for his friends. His death, no where except around his own hearthstone, will be more sincerely regretted than in Clay county, where he spent some twenty years of his life. Mr. Hughes removed from Clay county to St. Louis in 1849, but almost every year, and frequently oftener, he paid his friends her a visit, and was always welcomed by our old citizens with great cordiality. Whilst he was a firm and decided party man, he was kind, conciliatory and courteous to his political opponents, among whom he numbered some of his truest and warmest personal friends. He was a man of more than ordinary ability, and whilst a citizen of Clay, he was elevated to a seat in the State Legislature, and in the Congress of the United States. As has been truly stated by the Missouri Republican, hundreds there are all over Missouri who have received favors at the hands of Mr. Hughes, and who will cherish his memory with sincere affection.
