Reid rreid21@cox.net December 18, 2007, 9:53 pm Liberty Weekly Tribune, Nov. 23, 1849 OBITUARY Mr. Editor: It is with painful emotion that we record the death of one of the members of our order, Rev. J.M.C. Inskeep, a warm and devoted Son of Temperance. Bro. Inskeep, we think, was among the first that espoused the cause of the Sons of Temperance in this place, and during his stay here, which was until a few weeks before his death, manifested great interest and zeal in its welfare. Some two months since he located in the town of St. Joseph. After residence there of a few weeks, he was attacked with typhoid fever, which in eight short days threw down his earthly tabernacle, in the 38th year of his age. But he met his end with that fortitude and composure that is characteristic of a Christian and a Christina minister. On the 14th inst., his remains were brought to the residence of Mr. Simms, of this county, by his request before his death that the Sons of Temperance of Liberty division should bury him. The division dressed in their appropriate regalia with the usual badge of mourning, proceeded to the house of Mr. Simms, under the direction of Capt. O.P. Moss, a member of the order; the corpse was then borne by them to the grave yard, after which, a portion of the word of God was read, and a hymn sung by the Division; Rev. Z.N. Roberts, the offered prayer. The coffin was then deposited in the grave, and H.L. Routt. D.G.W.P. standing at the head of the grave, after a few and appropriate remarks, deposited a badge of the order in the coffin with the deceased. The Division then joined in singing the following Ode: “Yes we in those principles join, And such shall our actions display; Our hands and our hearts shall combine, To extend their beneficent sway! Our laws we will ever respect, Arise all contention above – And stand by each other erect, In Purity, Friendship, and Love!” To the Family and Friends of the deceased, the Division offer their condolence in this the hour of their affliction and bereavement. H.L. Routt, P.B. Grant, J.M. Jones. Previously published: Nov 16, 1849: In St. Joseph, on the 11th inst., after an illness of some 12 days, Rev. J.M.C.
