Solak, William EVELYN CROCKETT Evelyn Crockett, 89, Liberty, died Sept. 28, 2002, at Ashton Court Care Center, Liberty. Mass of Christian Burial was held Oct. 1 at St. James Catholic Church, Liberty; burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Gladstone. Crockett was born Jan. 20, 1913, in Kansas City to Eddie W. and Catherine Rose (Moran) Sears. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a 1932 graduate of Liberty High School. On April 8, 1933, she married Gordon Crockett. She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon; daughter Suzanne Crockett Phelps; brother, Jack Sears. Survivors include her son, Bill Crockett, Liberty; daughter and husband, Margaret and David Evenson, Liberty; three grandchildren, Marie Dove, Bruce Evenson, Brent Evenson; three great-grandchildren. ERNEST P. HILSCHER Ernest P. Hilscher, 83, Liberty, died Sept. 23, 2002 at Liberty Hospital. Services were held Sept. 26 at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Hilscher was a WWII veteran, where he served in the U.S. Army. During the war, he was stationed at Solomon Island, Bismarck Archipelago, and Luzon. He was also a lifetime member of the VWF Lodge #07900 and a master in Taekwondo. Hilscher also loved to eat at Beliner Bears in Kansas City. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. He was survived by one sister, Dorothy H. Stewart of Kansas City, MO. He was loved and will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and family. RUTH E. PRICE Ruth E. Price, 94, Liberty, died Sept. 24, 2002. Services were held Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Park Lawn Chapel. Burial was held in Memorial Park Cemetery. Ruth was born May 6, 1908 in Syracuse, KS. Survivors include a niece, Barbara Webb, great-niece, Lisa Campbell and a dear friend, Dory Lindsey. WILLIAM SOLAK William Solak, born Jan. 7, 1920, died in Liberty on Sept. 28, 2002. He was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery on Oct. 3. Although born and raised in Pennsylvania, he lived many years in the Kansas City area. He was a devout Byzantine Catholic and a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association. Surviving are his four children, 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister; one brother. LIBERTY TRIBUNE, October 9, 2002 Carlton, Donald A. "Shotgun" Cox Sr., Dwight H. Dean Wilder DONALD A. "SHOTGUN" CARLTON Donald A. "Shotgun" Carlton, 75, of Liberty, died at Research Hospital in Kansas City Sept. 30, 2002. Services were held Oct. 3 at the Norman-Wagy-Gordon Funeral Home in Chillicothe. Carlton was born Dec. 30 1926 he is the son of Fred A. and Bertha Baymiller Carlton in Chillicothe. On Dec. 24, 1955 he married Geri Mourning, she preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2000. Survivors include one son, Kevin L. Carlton, and daughter-in-law, Myrna, of Chillicothe, one sister, Doris Rowe, and brother-in-law James of Smyma, GA; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia Eastman. DWIGHT H. COX SR. Dwight H. Cox Sr., 87, of Olathe, KS, passed away Sept. 30, 2002. at Liberty Hospital. Military graveside services were held Friday, Oct. 4 at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO. DEAN WILDER Dean Wilder, the Robert H. McKee Emeritus Professor of Music at William Jewell College, passed away September 30 in Portland, Ore. Funeral arrangements are being handled through the Ross Hollywood Chapel in Portland, and a memorial service is tentatively planned on the William Jewell campus for November 1. Born November 10, 1938, in Portland, Wilder received professional training in opera from such artists as Boris Goldovsky, Julius Rudel and Thomas Martin and studied art song repertoire with John Moriarty and Allen Rogers in the United States and with Frau Hertha Klust in Germany. Wilder was perhaps best known as the tenor in the concert duo of Hale & Wilder. For 20 years Wilder and his partner, bass-baritone Robert Hale, presented more than 4,000 concerts all over the world in churches, colleges, universities and civic auditoriums, including several Billy Graham Crusades. The duo's career produced 21 recordings, many of which have recently been recompiled and re-released on compact disc through Word Music. Wilder had an extensive and impressive solo career as well, performing as leading tenor with the New York City Opera Company and the Goldovsky Opera Theatre, in addition to extensive solo performances with such conductors as Leonard Bernstein, William Steinberg, Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink and Robert Shaw. He sang at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Symphony Hall in Boston, Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles, among others. In addition to his performing career, Wilder was held in high regard as a teacher of voice. For the past 26 years he taught private voice and vocal pedagogy at William Jewell College, where he was the Robert H. McKee Emeritus Professor of Music. Wilder retired from William Jewell in May 2002, and in previous teaching appointments he served as Chairman of the Department of Voice at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, N.J., as well as on the faculties of the New England Conservatory of Music and Boston University. Wilder conducted numerous master classes, workshops and seminars on various aspects of vocal technique for universities, colleges, seminaries, associations and churches throughout the United States and around the world. A highlight of his 1994 sabbatical teaching assignment in Hong Kong included singing all of the tenor solos from Handel's Messiah in its premiere performance in Mandarin Chinese at the Hong Kong Cultural Hall. He received many awards and recognitions, including a Cultural Exchange Citation from the Republic of Korea, Outstanding Graduate Award, Cascade College, Outstanding Educators of America and listings in the International Whoís Who of Musicians, Men of Achievement and Personalities of the West and Midwest. Wilder is survived by his wife Mary Jane of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter Anne of Owings Mills, Maryland; and brothers Erwin Boring and Glen Boring of Portland. GRAHAM Rev. John R. Graham, 78, Liberty, died Oct. 13, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 17, at Park Lawn Northland Chapel, 1640 N. Highway 291, Liberty. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Oct. 18, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church; burial in Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials to the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church or the Clown Ministry. Graham was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Aurora Springs and grew up in Eldon. He served as a Southern Baptist Minister, music minister, teacher, clown and family counselor during his rich life. He was an active member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and was active in its choir, clown ministry and in counsel of married couples. He especially cared about young children and was affectionately known as "The Candy Man" to them; always sharing candy with children wherever he was. His family and many friends cherish his wit and love for life. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Jo. A native of North Carolina, Haney had been a resident of the Kansas City area, Clay and Platte County, from 1949 to 1996. He was retired employee of Armco Steel in Kansas City. Oberkrom was born Aug. 2, 1945, in Independence. He grew up in the Liberty community. He was all-state quarterback for Liberty High School, where he graduated in 1963. He played quarterback for William Jewell College and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, graduating in 1967. Oberkrom was named Outstanding Young Man of America. He served in the Kansas National Guard and was called to active duty in 1968 where he served for two years. Bridges was born April 22, 1912, in Amherst, Neb. She was a graduate of Redemptorist High School. She was a 57-year resident of Liberty, a member of St.. James Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She was a postal clerk for 15 years at the Kansas City main post office. She was a volunteer for the Immacolata Manor Thrift Shop and played the organ for senior resident homes. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and had been a supervisor for CPC International until his retirement in 1986 after 39 years of service. DAVID EUGENE HAYNES David Eugene Haynes, 62, Liberty, died Oct. 21, 2002, at the home. Haynes was born Aug. 8, 1940, in Kansas City, the son of Albert and Aileen (Harris) Haynes. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He retired from General Motors with over 35 years of service. ROLAND ARTHUR MAYOTTE Roland Arthur Mayotte, 67, Liberty, died Oct. 26, 2002, at North Kansas City Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held Oct. 30 at the Liberty Methodist Church; burial in Glenridge Cemetery. Mayotte was born Oct. 5, 1935, in Glen Falls, N.Y. and lived in Los Angeles before moving to Liberty 19 years ago. he graduated from St. Bonaventure University and later received his master's degree from new York University. He was a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Vietnam Era. He had a special love for boating and owned Erikson Yachts and Islander Yachts while in California and later May Yatchs in Riverside before he retired. He leaves his wife, Karen; five children, Leslie Debrick, Lory Mayotte, Donna Parsley, Jon Mayotte and Peter Mayotte; three sisters, Marjorie O'Leary, Veverly Macey, Linda Durham; three brothers, John, Clifford and Paul Mayotte; two grandchildren, tyler and Sydney. KATHRYN ANN BERRY POWELL Kathryn Ann Berry Powell 42, of Keesville, N.Y., formerly of Liberty, died Oct. 2, 2002,. Services will be held Nov. 2, at Grace Episcopal Church, 520 S. 291 Highway, Liberty. The family requests no flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Church in her name. Powell's girlhood was spent in Liberty, graduating high school in the class of 1978. She continued her education at the University of Missouri, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and with a Masters degree. She loved literature, music, jewelry and people. Once a friend-always a friend. She will be missed. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Thomas G. Powell; her parents, Tom and Theo Berry; her brother and sister-in-law, T.J. and Shelly Berry; her nephew and niece, Alex and Sami Jo Berry; grandparents Mr.. and Mrs. Herbert Berry. ANN JOY MASON SCOTT Ann Joy Mason Scott, 78, died Oct. 23, 2002 at her home. Memorial services were held Oct. 28 at Church Archer Pasley Funeral Home, Liberty. Memorial donations may be made to the Mid-Continent Girl School Council or the Clay County Archives and Historical Library. Mason, a lifelong resident of Clay and Platte counties, was born Feb. 18, 1924, the daughter of Rue Finley Mason and Minnie J. Adams Mason, in Liberty. She graduated from Liberty High School in 1942 and from Monticello College, Alton, Ill. in 1944. In August 1945 she married Richard Emery "Scotty" Scott. Beginning as a member of the first Brownie Troop in Liberty, she remained a supporter of the Girl Scout program throughout her life in both volunteer and professional capacities. She served as executive director of the Winding River Girl Scout Council from 1963 to 1980 and as assistant executive director of the Mid-Continent Girl Scout Council until her retirement in 1988. She enjoyed a broad range of interests, including various artistic pursuits, needle craft and genealogy and she always welcomed a good game of bridge with friends. A project that brought her much pleasure was the recent completion of a book tracing her family back 15 generations. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter. She is survived by her son, Richard Rue "Rick" Scott, whose companionship and excellent care allowed her to remain independent in her home; a son, Randal Emery Scott; daughter, Suzanne Scott; granddaughter, Sarah Joy Farnan. DOROTHY LEE YOUNG Dorothy Lee Young, 84, died Oct. 25, 2002, at Windemere RCF in Riverside, after a brief battle with cancer. Services were held Oct. 28 at the Park Lawn Chapel Hillcrest Road, Kansas City; burial in Mr. Moriah Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to Windemere RCF or North Care Hospice for their wonderful care of Dorothy. Young was born Jan. 14, 1918, in Kansas City. She and her husband, Lawrence, owned Better Homes Siding and Construction Company in the late 40's-early 50's. They built and operated the Putt-N-Bay in Sunrise Beach for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Alta Nicolai; her husband of 48 years, Lawrence C. Young, in 1983. She is survived by daughter, Donna Lee and husband, Ray Silvey, Liberty; son, Larry Young and wife, Sandy, Coal City, Ill.; sister Marjorie (Bobbie) and husband, Andy Danella, Raytown; sister-in-law, Dorothy Cohee, Kansas City North; three grandchildren, Sidney Silvey, Columbia, Pamela Morris, Owasso, Okla., Kelly Young Birmingham, Al.; four great-granddaughters; her constant friend and companion, "Sambo." GLEN VAN ZANDT Glen Van Zandt, 80 Liberty, died Oct. 18, 2002, at Cedars of Liberty.
