Reid rreid21@cox.net September 8, 2007, 12:48 pm The Liberty Tribune, Feb 22, 1861 The Liberty Tribune, Feb 22, 1861: Death of George W. Winn, Esq. A deep pall has fallen as it were over this community. One of our best citizens has passed away. He who but a very few days ago was in the prime and vigor of manhood, respected and esteemed alike by his fellow men, has fallen into “the sleep that know no waking.” We are unable to comprehend that our fellow-citizen is no more. But a few days before his untimely death, we had a long conversation with him. He was then, as ever, frank, manly and determined. George W. Winn was one of our most enterprising citizens. For a long time he had taken an active part in the public affairs of our county. He was elected to the office of Sheriff not many years ago, a post which he filled to the entire satisfaction of all good citizens. No man enjoyed the confidence of his fellow-citizens more than the deceased, and even with those to whom he was politically opposed. Was it to be expected, then, that he would be hurled into his grave ere he had lived “man’s allotted time.” But “In the midst of life we are death.” Mr. W. was stabbed on last Saturday morning, in a difficulty with one of his neighbors, named Columbus Jones. He was stabbed in four places. For a time it was expected that he would recover, but yesterday morning at four o’clock he was at rest forever. He will be buried to-day at the residence of his father, Gen. James Winn. We tender our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved widow and fatherless children of the deceased, and to his respected father and relatives. They best know the worth of him who will to-day be laid in his silent tomb. Requiescat in pace! We have no comments to make upon this sad affair. The proper authorities have taken the matter in hand, and will properly examine into the causes which have produced so much anguish. Plattsburg Reporter.
