Moss/Miller Cemetery - Crawford Co. The Moss/Miller cemetery is located in Crawford County, Missouri. It is on the west side of State Highway 19 between the towns of Steelville and Cuba on what used to be a part of the family homestead(1). The 900 square foot cemetery (30' per side) is surrounded by a chain link fence and only has one headstone engraved: Moss/Miller Family(2). The cemetery was on land originally homestead by Jared Burton Moss.(3) Today the Moss lands have been split and several roads transverse the original property. The cemetery is located in Crawford County, Missouri about halfway between the towns of Steelville and Cuba. A newly rebuilt State Highway 19 (2002) is now located right next to the cemetery. The corner of the cemetery abuts to the highway right a way. The cemetery is across (west of) from "Bird's Nest Road". The legal being: NE1/4, NW1/4, SE1/4, Section 17, Township 38N, Range 4W, of the 3rd Principal Meridian. It will plot out (NAD27) as UTM = 15S 642062 mE x 4208107 mN. END NOTES 1 The cemetery appears to be deeded although I have never researched the original record. The cemetery has been noted and excluded on land transfers in this location. 2 The small cemetery stone was made by David F. Sharp (1893-1963), a stone mason and the second husband of Viola M. Sharp nee Conlin (1895-1986), (she was a granddaughter of Jared B. and May J. Moss). The other plots have copper plates at the head of each site. They were made by Edwin R. Moutray (1905-1996), (who was the husband of Marie E. Moutray nee Miller (1909- ), (a great- granddaughter of Jared B. and Mary J. Moss). The 4' high chain link fence installation was paid for by Florence J. Bare/Brewer nee Conlin (1906-1999), (a granddaughter of Jared and Mary). 3 80 acres of land with the legal of: N1/2, SE1/4, Sec. 17, TS 38N, R4W. This land was acquired as a "Homestead to actual settlers on the Public Domain" Homestead Certificate No. 1383, Application 4556, application made in Booneville, Missouri, filed 1 May 1874. Also filed in the Crawford County, Missouri, US Patent Record Book "B" Page 102. After fulfilling the requirements of the homestead act, the land ownership would be filed 19 Dec. 1887 in Crawford County Land Record Book "3" Page 382. 4 Personal observation and measurement.
