Villages of Crawford County, Missouri - CHERRYVILLE Cherryville is situated at the junction of Highways 19 and 49 about ten miles south of Steelville. As the name suggests the area once abounded in cherry trees. Villa means village, and the union of the words "cherry" and "villa" gives the work Cherryville. It had its beginning in 1884 when George Day moved from Steelville and established a store at Cherryville. That same year he was commissioned postmaster and served for several years, and was followed by Mrs. Ed. Ives, Tom Bowers, and Clint Cottrell. George Day operated a store from 1884 till 1888, and following those years the mercantile busi ness was carried on by Scott Parret, Floyd Britton, Tom Bowers, Cottrell Bowers, R. D. Cottrell, Clint Cottrell, and the Cassady family. Cherryville until recently had a fine four-year high school and an elementary school. During the past four years efforts were made by the Viburnum system to absorb portions of the school district. Recently the high school had been transferred to the Viburnum R-IV District, but the elementary school has remained at Cherryville. There are three churches in Cherryville at present, namely Baptist, Pentecostal, and Assembly of God. The Baptist Church at Cherryville has been a large congregation but has declined in membership in the last few years. The new Lead Belt Railroad was completed past Cherryville in l967 but no siding or freight house was constructed. Cherryville was incorporated as a village on October 31, 1938, and awaits the turn of fate for its future. ------ CRAWFORD COUNTY AND CUBA MISSOURI James Ira Breuer, 1972 p. 102-103 ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
