Villages of Crawford County, Missouri - DELHI Today little remains of Delhi. The only building left of the later period is the brick school which was built about 1900 a mile or so south of the site of the original village. This brick schoolhouse served for many years as a good rural school, and when closed continued to be used as a voting place. Delhi had its beginning with George W. Forbes, a rugged Virginian who settled on the Little Bourbeuse and reared ten children. He was by trade a carpenter but purchased forty acres of unimproved land. Eventually by hard work he acquired more land and finally owned one hundred fifty acres. In 1885, just three years after the family came to the Little Bourbeuse, he was appointed postmaster. In 1890 he built a second story on his home, which served as the post office headquarters also. Sometime between 1890 and 1900 the post office was closed but was reopened on April 3, 1903, by George Stevens who also added a stock of goods and became the first Delhi merchant. In 1906 George Stevens sold his store to J. D. Stevens who was then appointed postmaster. When the settlers began to come to the area they felt a need for a place to worship. Near the store the Antioch Christian Church was built and in 1888 the Delhi Methodist Church was established. In later years the Delhi Baptist Church was established and today it is the only one left in the community. The original site of the first school, the first store and post office, and the Antioch Baptist Church building now is owned by Virgil Ware who has erected a fine home on the spot. ------ CRAWFORD COUNTY AND CUBA MISSOURI James Ira Breuer, 1972 p. 112-113 ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
