Villages of Crawford County, Missouri - VIEMAN The Vieman post office and store had its beginning about 1900. The dual business began with Lorenzo D. Vieman who was born in the Vieman set- tlement in Gasconade County near Red Bird. He opened the first store at Red Bird. Later he moved to a farm, began the mercantile business, and was appointed post- master in 1904 at Vieman. In 1905 he sold his busi- ness to M. P. Shoemaker who also took over the post office. At that time Ralph Bowen became the mail car- rier from Vieman to Cuba. A few years later Frank Stubblefield bought the Vieman Store and the post office was finally discontinued. After the closing of the post office the store continued in business. It was owned for a period by Nick Licklider and later by A. L. Branson. Today the buildings are vacant, the few scattered houses at the site and the old Ebenezer Church down the lane are slowly crumbling in decay. In a few years the last vestige of Vieman on Brushy Prairie will have disappeared. ------ CRAWFORD COUNTY AND CUBA MISSOURI James Ira Breuer, 1972 p. 111 ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
