Villages of Crawford County, Missouri - WESTOVER Westover is located on the beautiful Huzzah Creek about ten miles southeast of Steelville. The little village never became commercially important, but is noted as one of the many fine gristmill locations in the country. The gristmill and carding machine were constructed by J. Hobart Westover about 1860 and was used for many years for grinding corn into meal and carding the wool for the early settlers in the region. Westover also had a post office but the only known postmaster was Boney Rogers. The post office was closed years ago, the mill wheels are silent, and a new industry is presently using the facilities. The site is now used by the Westover Fish Hatchery which began its operation in 1927. The old millrace is modified for trout ponds and the old mill is used for pacldng fish. ------ CRAWFORD COUNTY AND CUBA MISSOURI James Ira Breuer, 1972 p. 82 ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
