Villages of Crawford County, Missouri - WHITSETT Whitsett is located about five miles north of Cuba on the old Cuba-Oak Hill Road. About 1900 William Cunningham who had acquired a large tract of land built a concrete store building, and put in a fine stock of goods. A post office was established and William Cunningham was appointed postmaster. For a time it appeared that the little village had a bright future. In 1905 a blacksmith shop was in operation, worked by Pierce Brothers. Regular dray service was carried on between Vvrhitsett and Cuba. Business declined in a few years and the Cunninghams sold the farm and store. At present the farm is owned by Leroy Leezy, a retired banker who raised cattle and enjoys his retirement. The old store building is still, standing and is used for storing farm products. ------ CRAWFORD COUNTY AND CUBA MISSOURI James Ira Breuer, 1972 p. 111-112 ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
