Dorothy Leona Harper
Dorothy Leona Harper nee Adams was born Thursday, March 17, 1927,
a daughter of the late Alice (Doss) and Willis Adams.
She entered eternal rest Wednesday, December 22, 2004,
at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri, at the
age of 77 years, 9 months and 5 days.
On January 24, 1942, Dorothy was united in marriage to
Donald Arthur Harper. Two sons, and two daughters were born to this
union. They have enjoyed over 62 years together.
Dorothy was a loving wife and mother. She was kind and
compassionate, always willing to help others. She loved animals,
especially her poodle, Muffin. She was a good cook, making vinegar
pies and fried raisin pies that were loved by her family and always
a treat at family reunions. Her kids and grandkids always asked
"Which potato salad's Mom's?"; they always thought it was the best.
Even though she was unable to attend school past the
third grade, she taught herself to read and write, and continually
worked to improve herself. She was self-conscious of her penmanship,
so she did word and number fill-in puzzles to practice her writing.
She was always an avid reader. She was a talented seamstress and
quilter. She pieced and hand-quilted many quilts for her family, and
also quilted for others.
As well as working on the family farm, Dorothy worked
for 19 years at Convey Heel Supply until the company closed, and
then at Brown Shoe Company, in the Heel Cover Department. Although
her hands became misshapen from arthritis after years of using
heavy scissors to trim leather, she never complained.
Dorothy was a talented singer and musician. She loved
singing bluegrass music and was a regular at the Saturday night jam
sessions at the Cuba Senior Center, playing guitar and singing, as
long as her health allowed. She also visited area nursing homes with
other musicians and singers to entertain the elderly. She was
always willing to help anyone to play and always encouraged them to
keep practicing.
Dorothy was diagnosed with cancer in 1964 and again in
1998, but both times was able to recover and lived a full, happy
life.
In 2004, on the day before Easter, she was diagnosed
with Burkitt's Lymphoma. Although she underwent chemotherapy, and
went through a short remission, she was unable to overcome this
devastating disease. She was optimistic through her illness, and
never complained or showed an ounce of self-pity. She was an
inspiration to her family and everyone who knew her. She will be
sadly missed, her passing creating a void that can never be filled.
Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her
devoted husband, Donald A. Harper of the home in Steelville,
Missouri; two sons, Charles Harper and wife Donna also of
Steelville, Missouri, and Lonnie A. Harper and wife Jean of
Sullivan, Missouri; one daughter, Linda Pope and husband Ed of
Steelville, Missouri.
Two sisters, Betty Hogan and husband Bob of Fenton,
Missouri, Pauline Garrison and husband Orville of Joplin, Missouri;
sisters-in-law, Rachel Adams, Jeanette Harper and Gladene Harper.
Seven grandchildren, Regina Slovensky and husband Tom,
Rita Eaton and husband Joe, Stephen Harper and wife Tammy, Jason
Harper and wife Becky, Dustin Harper and wife Sheilah, Robin Kerley
and husband Ken, Don Garms and friend Kara.
Fourteen great-grandchildren, Andrew, Cyrus, Seth and
Matthias Slovensky, Hannah and Hope Eaton, Jonathan and Bethany
Harper, Danielle and Jonathan Harper, Kayla Harper, Joshua and Derek
Harper, Aaron Kerley and Sage Garms; nieces, nephews, cousins,
other relatives and friends.

a daughter, Donna Lee Harper; daughter-in-law, Barbara Sue (Davis)
Harper; two sisters, Mildred Schoen and Ilene Adams; one brother,
Charles Edmond Adams; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Thomas
Harper, Harry Harper, Rev. W. K. Harper and Orpha, Herbert Harper
