On September 5, 1954 in the First Baptist Church of Steelville, Georgia Beth married James H. Barksdale. They met at the First Baptist Church and Jim joined the church choir to meet Georgia Beth. Their first real date was to a basketball game in Cherryville, Missouri. When they were first married, Georgia Beth worked for Lay Bonded Abstract Company for 13 years and after that, they bought a shoe store and she managed it until it was sold. She then went to work for the Crawford Mirror and retired in 2000. She enjoyed traveling with Jim throughout the years while he sold his wooden decoys and helping get ready for his shows. Georgia Beth and Jim both taught Sunday School and continued to sing in the choir for 63 years. She also enjoyed bowling, weaving baskets, doing word search puzzles and roller skating. They both set a good Christian example for their family by putting God at the head of the family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Celeste Hopkins. Peggy Zoan Blue Peggy Zoan Blue of Newburg, Missouri was born on September 24, 1928 in Newburg, Missouri to Nort and Ruby (Root) Spradling and passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at the age of 89 years. Peggy resided in Newburg, Missouri until 2015 when she moved into the Presbyterian Manor, Rolla, Missouri. After high school she married Fred Blue Sr. She worked at Fort Leonard Wood during its development and the Rolla School of Mines (now Missouri S&T) before she and Fred opened up their family grocery business, Blues Market in their hometown, Newburg, Missouri. She and Fred enjoyed 45 years together before his death on November 24, 1995. Peggy was a gifted artist whose focus was on painting and playing the piano. She was a longtime member of Newburg Baptist Church where she was also their pianist and a member of the local Eastern Star Chapter. She enjoyed listening, singing and playing music. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nort and Ruby Spadling; husband, Fred; and one sister, Muriel Henson. Philip Wayne Burdett Philip Wayne Burdett of Steelville, Missouri was born on Saturday, March 16, 1957 in St. Louis, Missouri to Virlyn Revis and Norma Deane (Smith) Burdett and passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at the age of 60 years, 9 months and 14 days. Phil attended Riverview School in St. Louis, Missouri where early on he met his lifelong friend, John Watson. This special friendship with John, and later with John's wife Virginia, is what would influence Phil, along with his wife Annette, to teach and retire in Steelville, Missouri. He graduated from Riverview High School with a baseball scholarship to William Jewel College, which he considered to be the "Harvard of the Midwest," where he received his accounting degree. After working as an accountant for around a decade, Phil attended the University of Missouri-St. Louis to earn his degree in Education. He later went on to receive a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Phil taught government, history, civics, etc. in schools in Silex, Missouri, Wright City, Missouri, Bowling Green, Missouri and later Steelville, Missouri. In Silex, he helped coach the girl's basketball team to a state championship. In Wright City, he coached both girls softball and basketball. He then taught in Bowling Green, Missouri, where he would meet his wife, Annette, who also worked at the school as a principal. While at Bowling Green, he coached girls softball, girls basketball and some boys baseball. Lastly, at Steelville High School he coached girls softball and basketball and always announced the girls Powder Puff football game. Phil enjoyed photography, watching sports and fishing. He also watched Nascar every Sunday with his mother. On June 5, 2010, Phil married Annette Rufkahr at Liberty Church, Steelville, Missouri. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and beloved dog, Finn McCool. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virlyn and Norma Burdett; father-in-law, William Rufkahr; and brother Steven (Donna) Burdett. James "Jim" Rodney Carr James "Jim" Rodney Carr of Yucaipa, California, formerly of Steelville, Missouri, was born December 13, 1935 in Cook Station, Missouri to Walter Irving and Elsie (nee Grayson) Carr and passed away Sunday, December 17, 2017 at the age of 82 years and 4 days. While serving in the U.S. Air Force, Jim met his future bride, Elizabeth "Liz" Newman, who was also in the U.S. Air Force. They were married on February 17, 1957 at Travis Air Force Base in California.. Jim served honorably in the Air Force for 20 years until his retirement in 1974. During his service, he was a flight engineer flying 72 combat missions in Vietnam. After retirement, Jim owned and operated Copy-Co in Los Angeles, California. After selling his business, he and his wife moved to Springfield, Missouri where he worked for the Core of Engineers. After several years, he moved back to his home area in Steelville, Missouri until recently when both of their health declined. He was a member of the VFW American Legion. Jim attended the Baptist church in earlier years. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Glen Carr and wife Wanda, Kermit Carr and wife Ellenor and Calvin "Chink" Carr; two sisters, Virginia Norris and husband Ted and Leota Land and husband Bob; and brother-in-law, Larry Garms. Elvin was a lifelong resident of the Potosi, Missouri area. He married Mary Beth Long in Potosi, Missouri on June 8, 1982. He was a local pioneer of canoeing outfitters and owned Misty Valley Canoe Rental and Campground on the Courtois River in Steelville, Missouri. His guests there often returned for years afterward to visit and have the unique experience only Elvin could give them. He loved creating a happy time for the children, often bringing them ice cream and telling them stories to make them smile. He accepted the Lord into his life in his later years. He was a member of the Eagles Club in Viburnum, Missouri. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. She worked at Angelica Uniform Factory in Summersville, Missouri for many years. Later, after moving to Steelville, Missouri, her cooking skills were appreciatively employed at Al's Cafe for a number of years. Her hobbies included arts and crafts, sewing, cooking, and square dancing. She particularly enjoyed holidays and spending time with her family. At a young age, Ruth was saved and baptized at the First Baptist Church of Leasburg, Missouri. She married Roscoe Hulsey on July 19, 1947 in Bourbon, Missouri. Ruth worked alongside her husband in the family construction business as a bookkeeper. She was a dedicated Christian and long time member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Bourbon where she taught Sunday school, was a Deacons wife, member of WMA, taught VBS and was a prayer warrior. She loved birdwatching and collecting sea shells. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Hulsey; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Tucker and husband Glen; one son, Kenneth Hulsey; granddaughter, Sonya Tucker; her parents, Harold and Alta (Pinnell) Lewis; and one brother-in-law, Clyde Scantlan. Nick spend his younger days tearing up the racetrack winning countless races and becoming a favorite (Nick Allen #33). He later joined the Floor Layers Union and eventually opened his own company in Kansas City area known as AC Distributors for many years and retired from there moving to the Lake of the Ozarks. Carol Joyce McMinn Carol Joyce McMinn of St. James, Missouri was born in Maries County, Missouri on September 10, 1946 to Clarence L. and Helen L. Brown Southard and passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the age of 71 years, 3 months, and 18 days. She lived on her family's farm her entire life and loved the country life. She attended the one room Lacy School through the eighth grade and graduated from Rolla High School in 1964. She enjoyed attending her high school reunions and catching up with her old friends. Carol married Robert McMinn on March 5, 1971 in Rolla, Missouri. Carol went to work at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in 1964 and retired January 1, 2017 after 52 years of service. Her pastimes were cooking, gardening and feeding the wild birds. She was a wonderful cook. She published her own cookbook for her children and grandchildren titled "Granny's Famous Recipes." She had a special place in her heart for "Baby Cohen," her first great grandson. She was a former member of the Broadway Baptist Church and current a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and married Ludena Ann Nettle on August 30, 1963. They remained in St. Louis, Missouri until 1986 when he and Ludena moved to Bourbon, Missouri. Jimmy was employed as a truck driver for several years and for 18 years by the Chrysler Corporation. Jimmy loved to cook and was known for his bread and roll making and also his dressing. He loved sailing, camping, traveling and playing the guitar. Most of all, he loved his family and riding motorcycles with his good friend, Dennis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ruby Whitehead. He is survived by his wife, Ludena Whitehead of Bourbon, Missouri; four children, Jenifer Whitehead of Bourbon, Missouri and companion, Randy Nolie of Sullivan, Missouri, Christopher Whitehead and wife Karen of Pacific, Missouri, Jimmy D. Whitehead Jr. and wife Amy of Springfield, Missouri and Sarah Haag of Portland, Oregon and companion Phillip Almarez; 12 grandchildren, Michael Griffin and wife Amy, Krystal Meyer and husband Steven, Timothy Getzin, Christopher Whitehead, Ruby Whitehead, Sierra Hoaglin, Jasa Whitehead, T.J., Devon and Kyle Johnson, Kyle Stafford and Mariah Hoaglin; six great grandchildren, Salena Griffin, Abigail Meyer, Jackson Hoaglin, Cayson Johnson, Julian Kuikendall and baby boy Meyer on the way; two brothers, Paul Whitehead and wife Rita of Warrenton, Missouri and Wayne Whitehead and wife Cathy of Washington, Missouri; motorcycle riding buddy, Dennis Julian; other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri with Pastor Harold Harrison officiating. Interment followed in the Bourbon Cemetery. Betty Jo Wodicker Betty Jo Wodicker of Owensville, Missouri was born on May 22, 1934 in Reynolds County, Texas to Frank and Johanna (Goetz) Chasak and passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at the age of 83 years. On October 4, 1953 married Elmer R. Wodicker in San Angelo, Texas. She worked as an operator for AT&T. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Johanna Chasak; and her husband, Elmer Wodicker. She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Dessau and husband Rick of St. Louis, Missouri and Laura Shockley and husband Keith of Cuba, Missouri; one brother, Fred Chasak and wife Linda of Garland, Texas; four grandchildren, Amanda Stallard and husband Bill of Oakville, Missouri, Eric Dessau of St. Louis, Missouri, Renee Barton and husband Monty of Owensville, Missouri and Kristina Fisher and husband Todd of St. Louis, Missouri; three great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
