MO Local Obituaries for the Week of January 14, 2004 James Lowell Bommel James Lowell Bommel, age 68 years, of Jefferson City, Missouri, died Thursday, January 8, 2004, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born February 20, 1935, in Humboldt, Iowa, a son of August Walter and Grace Marian Gaster Bommel. He attended New Bloomfield High School and graduated in 1953. He was married September 4, 1960, in Linn, Missouri to Dixie Lee Schnitzler, On April 3, 1986, he was married to Jeanne Arlene Moser in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Bommel spent his working years in St. Louis, Missouri, as a linotype operator and supervisor for the St. Louis Post Dispatch for 32 years. He was an active member of the International Typographical Union. Upon retirement he moved to the Indian Hills Lake Community at Cuba, Mo., before residing in Jefferson City since 2002. He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 stationed in Korea. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed metal detecting and had a wonderful sense of humor. Survivors include one son, James Lowell Bommel, Jr., of St. Louis, Mo., and one daughter, Michelle Elaine Bommel-Reinheimer and husband Dan of Westminster, Colorado, four grandchildren, Jessica Grace Reinheimer, Jacob Charles Reinheimer, Alexandria June Bommel and Jagger James Bommel; three brothers, Robert Donald Bommel and wife Betty, of Cuba, Mo., Floyd Eugene Bommel and wife Melba, of Holts Summit, Mo., and twin brother, Gerald Laurel Bommel and wife, Emma, of Jefferson City, Mo., and one sister-in-law, Iona Bommel of Taos, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John Dale Bommel in 1995, and August Bommel, Jr. in 1925. Visitation was held Sunday, January 11, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at the Buescher Memorial Home, Jefferson City, Mo. Funeral services were held Monday, January 12, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Buescher Memorial Home with Chaplain Don Evans officiating. Graveside service and interment with military honors immediately followed the funeral, at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson City, Mo. Arrangements were under the direction of the Buescher Memorial Home, 429 E. Capitol Avenue, Jefferson City, Mo. Mary Diehl Colton Mary Diehl Colton of Cuba, Missouri was born on January 1, 1925 to the union of William Diehl and Ray Gaw Diehl at Steelville, Missouri and passed away suddenly on January 9, 2004 at the age of 79 years and 8 days. Mary received a business degree, with a minor in English in the spring of 1947 from Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Mo. She was working in St. Louis, for Shear Chevrolet, in Maplewood when the Cuba School Superintendent, Mr. Brenton, "needed a high school business teacher." She did have a teaching certification also, but did not think she would ever use it. She agreed to teach for only one year, and the rest is history. There was a time when many of the residents of Cuba were in a class taught by "Mrs. Colton." Mrs. Colton received her Masters degree in business in 1979. She taught 40 years for the Crawford County R-2 School system, then when retiring in 1987, the University of Missouri in Rolla, Mo., asked her to teach computer science. She did that for five years. Outside of the classroom, Mary's interest was varied. With her husband Chauncey Colton, Jr., she helped run farm implement and motorcycle sales businesses. Chauncey and Mary participated in small airplane flying tournaments throughout the US. She also traveled throughout the US and Canada after her retirement, and enjoyed her former teaching colleagues, community friends and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Chauncey Colton, Jr.; her son, William Colton; her mother, Rae Gaw Diehl and her father, William E. Diehl; one sister Frances Mullen and brother-in-law William Mullen; and niece Linda Mullen Jones. She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Meyr and husband Don and Mary El-Baz, her nieces, Susan Casarotto and husband Larry and Mary Alice Gindhart, and her grandsons, Dean El-Baz and Ben El-Baz. Graveside services were held on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 12 noon with Gary Mace officiating. Interment was in the Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. All arrangements under the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Louise R. Kruse Louise R. Kruse of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Sunday, January 4, 2004 at the age of 90 years. Mrs. Kruse was born October 20, 1913 at Bourbon to Edwin Lawrence and Lelia (Hill) Hume. She was raised in the Bourbon area and before her marriage, had traveled and lived various places across the country which included Indiana, Florida and California. Mrs. Kruse also was an elementary school teacher for a time at Robertsville, Mo. On January 12, 1936 she was united in marriage to Hans Edward Kruse at Waterloo, Illinois and to this marriage five children were born. In 1944 they bought a farm in Bourbon, which is still in operation today. Mrs. Kruse was a resident of Meramec Nursing Center the past few years. She was known as a good person who was independent and hard working. She enjoyed flowers and gardening and especially animals. Mrs. Kruse was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Bourbon. She is survived by two sons, Fred Kruse and wife Janet of Cuba, Mo., Mike Kruse and wife Patricia, all of Cuba, Mo.; three daughters, Karen Higgins and husband Ernest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ann Bowersox and husband Mike and Chris Kruse, all of Bourbon, Mo., one sister Sarah Busch of Sullivan, Mo., 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Louise was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister all in their infancy. Memorial funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m., Thursday evening, January 8, 2003 from the First United Methodist Church in Bourbon. A time of gathering for family and friends was held Thursday from 6 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. at the church. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Chapel, Bourbon, Mo. Ethel Sue West Ethel Sue West (nee Stevens) was born in Delhi, Missouri on October 8, 1911 to the family of Thomas Stevens and Mahala Chapman Stevens and passed away on January 8, 2004 at Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 92 years and 3 months. On September 24, 1932, Ethel was united in marriage to Elza West, one son, Gary and two daughters, Bonnie and Peggy, were born to this union. Ethel and Elza enjoyed almost 69 years together until he preceded her in death on September 11, 2001. Their daughter, Bonnie, also preceded her in death. Ethel was also preceded in death by her parents, and four sisters, Bessie Eipper, Evelyn White, Florence McWilliams and Edith Weiser. Ethel was a long time resident of Crawford County and a member of the Cuba Methodist Church. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her loving children Gary West and wife Kathleen of Cuba, Missouri and Peggy Powell and husband Paul of Farmington, Missouri; her brother Thomas Stevens Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri. One sister, Nobel Pozniak of O'Fallon, Missouri. Seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Ethel was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Ethel Sue West nee Stevens was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri where funeral services were held on Sunday, January 11, 2004 at 2 p.m. with Gary Mace officiating. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri. All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri. Willard Arvel Worley Willard Arvel Worley of Cuba, Missouri was born on April 18, 1918 at Steelville, Missouri to the union of Morris Worley and Esther Eaton Worley and passed away on January 9, 2004 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 21 days. On August 24, 1968 Willard was united in marriage to Gloria Neff in Steelville, Missouri. They have been happily married for 35 years. Willard was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Willis Worley and two sisters, Edith Worley and Erma Wisdom. Willard was a retired minister and always enjoyed attending church at Elayer Pentecostal Church of God. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his loving wife Gloria Worley; one son Morris Worley; one daughter Darlene Williams; mother and father-in-law Ocie and Effie Neff; one brother Bill Worley; two grandchildren Ashley Worley and Derrik Schuler; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. Willard was a devoted husband, loving father, son-in-law, grandfather, brother, good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Willard A. Worley was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri where funeral services were held on Monday, January 12, 2004 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Harvey Buckley and Rev. Homer Morris officiating.
