MO Local Obituaries for the Week of January 16, 2008 Alice Brewer Alice Brewer of Cuba, Missouri was born to the union of Andrew and Cora (Stubblefield) Carroll on February 10, 1904 in Cuba, Missouri and passed away Sunday, January 13, 2008 at the age of 103 years, 11 months and 3 days. Alice was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking and planting flowers. Most of all she enjoyed the time that she spent with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Roy Odo Brewer and George Warnhoff; one son, Pinckney Andrew Brewer; one daughter, Faye Parnell; three brothers, Bradford, Charles and Raymond Carroll; five sisters, Clara Giesler, Nora Wassershied, Florence Brewer, Fanny Brewer and Veda. She is survived by four daughters, Margaret Senecal of St. James, Missouri, Janet Bialock of Cuba, Missouri, Jean Merritt of Cuba, Missouri and Renae Cassidy of Steelville, Missouri; one son, Donald Brewer of Cuba, Missouri; 16 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 34 great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Charles Ray Cassidy Charles “Ray” Cassidy of Cherryville, Missouri was born on February 18, 1935 to the union of Herman Roy Cassidy and Edith Mae Britton Cassidy. Wednesday evening when feeding his livestock on his farm he was tragically trampled by a bull. He passed away the morning of January 4, 2008 at St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis from his injuries at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 17 days. Ray married Carolyn Annette Mortensen June 28, 1996 in Sedalia, Missouri. Ray’s career started in 1952 in various fields of manufacturing, management consulting, and the aerospace industry until 1981. He then moved back to his hometown and opened a business to be closer to his family. After four years he decided to get back into what he loved, by serving as the Crawford County Representative for the Central Ozark Private Industry Council. After retirement from being a representative he accepted a position to work directly for the company. In March of 1990 he became the Rapid Response Coordinator with the Central Ozark Private Industry Council, Inc., which today is known as Central Region Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (C-WIB). Ray was in his 18th year. He represented the C-WIB in the Meramec Regional Planning Commission, Mid- Missouri Planning Commission and the Lake of the Ozark Council of Local Government meetings. He also served as a board member for Freeman Cemetery. In the early 90’s he found his way back to the Church of Jesus Christ-Salem Restoration Branch and became actively involved in the priesthood. His calling and faith was strong and he became Elder Charles “Ray” Cassidy. He is survived his wife; one daughter, Stephanie Cassidy and Steve Michalik of Ellisville, Missouri; two sons, Niels Mortensen II, and wife Dana of O’Fallon, Missouri and Paul Mortensen and wife Melissa of Steelville, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Ashley Baumann, Lance Corporal Curtis Wolverton and wife Meagan, Joshua Mortensen, Justin Mortensen, Niels Mortensen III, Nickolas Mortensen, Joshua Engstrom and Danielle Engstrom; and other relatives. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2007 at the Britton- Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri with Elder Melvin Quick and Priest Lowell Quick officiating. The congregation sang “We Are One in Spirit” and “God Forgave My Sin in Jesus Name” “The Spirit of God Like a Fire is Burning” was sung by Rev. Jerry Beers and accompanied on piano by Sharon Hardecke. Casket bearers were Niels Mortensen II, Paul Mortensen, Joshua Mortensen, Justin Mortensen, Steve Michalik, T. Gilbert Wayne Davis Gilbert Wayne Davis, 82, of Steelville, Missouri, was born May 29, 1925 in Davisville, Missouri to Roy and Fannie (Martin) Davis. He passed away Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Missouri Veterans Home in St. James, Missouri. On January 13, 1944 he was united in marriage to Ina (Harris) Davis. Gilbert was one of the founders and an active member of the Midland Pentecostal Assembly Church and had donated the land for the church. He had served on the church board and was song leader for many years. When his health permitted, Gilbert was very active in the community as a member of the Cattleman’s Association, representative for the Agricultural Soil Conservation Service, honored as “Outstanding Farmer of the year in 1976”, and was involved in the committee for the Republican Party for Crawford County. He had served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, three children, Barbara Sue Harper, Gilbert Edgar Davis and Phillip Alan Davis; two sisters, Hazel Gibbs and husband Ray, Nerene McGlasson and husband Bruce; four brothers, Glen Davis and wife Virginia, Max Davis, two brothers-in-law, Treffie Adams and Vincel Cottrell, four sisters-in-law, Ina Davis, Agnes Davis, Violet Hewkin and Mildred Turnbough and husband Cletus. Samuel Lee Halbert Samuel Lee Halbert, 34, of Steelville, Missouri was born November 21, 1973 in Rolla, Missouri to Ken and Elizabeth (Callahan) Halbert. He passed away Friday, January 4, 2008 in Steelville, Missouri. On May 3, 1997, he was united in marriage to Sara (Wallis) Halbert. Sam worked in the family business at Halbert Construction in Steelville. He was a member of the Straightway Baptist Church of Steelville where he was the music director. Sam along with Sara helped with the youth of the church. He enjoyed playing softball, deer hunting and most of all being with his family. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, B.L. “Doc” Halbert; his grandparents, Fred and Margaret Callahan; mother-in-law Peggy Wallis, grandparents-in-law, Andy and Gladys Wallis and William Fields. John William Kimmel John William Kimmel of Cuba, Missouri was born July 24, 1954 at Del Rio, Texas to the union of Floyd Kimmel and Helen (nee Newman) Wright and passed away Sunday, January 13, 2008 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 53 years, 5 months and 6 days. John had been a cabinet maker for many years. He worked at Kirkwood Stairs in Pacific for several years and he taught the Stage Lighting and Set Design at East Central College for six years. He was a Captain of the 9th Sharp Shooters Confederate Unity. He spent the past 15 plus years doing Civil War Reenactments at Wilson Creek Battlefield in Springfield, Missouri and Fort Davidson Battlefield in Pilot Knob, Missouri. He was preceded in death by many family members and friends. She passed away Saturday, January 5, 2008 at her home in St. Louis, Missouri. On August 16, 1941, she was united in marriage to John G. (Jack) Lally. She was preceded in death by one brother Charles Bangert Spencer. Nellie Ann Monda Nellie Ann Monda of Cuba, Missouri was born Sunday, July 13, 1913 to the union of James and Mary (nee Connell) Adair and passed away Monday, January 7, 2008 at Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 94 years, 5 months and 25 days. Nellie was united in marriage to Walter E. Monda on December 28, 1927 at Rolla, Missouri and to this union seven children were born. She spent her life taking care of her family, but in her spare time she enjoyed quilting, growing African Violets, sewing and crocheting. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Cuba for over 65 years. She was preceded in death by one son, Roger Monda; her parents; one son-in-law, Jim Nelson; four brothers, Clarence, Austin, Arthur and Buck Adair; four sisters, Virginia Williams.
