MO Local Obituaries for the Week of January 20, 2021 Robert "Bob" Charles Becker Robert "Bob" Charles Becker of Steelville, Missouri was born April 2, 1944 in Rolla, Missouri to Edward James and Hildred Martha Hendrix Becker and passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 8 days. Bob married Linda Kay Brown on June 5, 1965 at the Steelville First Baptist Church. Bob served his country honorably in the U.S. Army. He had been a member of the Straightway Baptist Church for over 30 years and served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He and Linda had been attending the Steelville First Baptist Church in the last several months. After 28 years with Boeing in St. Louis, Missouri Bob retired and found himself just as busy around home as ever. He enjoyed woodworking, making many pieces, such as porch swings, baby cradles, shelves, boxes and gun cabinets. He often took time to turkey hunt or go fishing at Big River or the Missouri River. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Hildred Becker; and parents-in-law, Chester and Alma Brown. Donna Rae Brockett Donna Rae (nee Kirk) Brockett of Bourbon, Missouri was born on Friday, August 12, 1938 in Shelby County, Iowa to Nels Christensen and Helen Escher Kirk and passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021 at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 27 days. She graduated from Harlan High School in Harlan, Iowa in 1956. On May 21, 1959 she married Kenneth Franklin Weihs in Harlan, Iowa. While her husband was stationed in the armed services, Donna trained in San Francisco as an obstetric technician and worked in that field for a few years. On February 14, 1978 she married Jerry Lee Brockett. She had accepted the Lord early in life and they attended and were active at Texoma Baptist Church. She loved to shop, take part in the activities at the senior center and attend church. Other hobbies included gardening, canning, making jellies, crocheting afghans for family members and cooking. Donna enjoyed raising chickens, going fishing and occasionally making moonshine. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nels and Helen Kirk; husband, Jerry Lee Brockett; and brother, Franklin Dale Kirk. She married Floyd Callahan Jr. Audrey was employed at Baldor Electric in Valley Park, Missouri for a number of years and also worked at Gen Corp in Cuba, Missouri, Mobil in Bourbon, Missouri, BW Freeman and Ozark Technology in Cuba, Missouri and also as a cook for the Steelville Public Schools. She attended the Faith Chapel Church in Cuba, Missouri. Audrey was a member of the Golden Girls in Steelville, Missouri for a few years. She always enjoyed playing Uno, word search and reading romance books. When Vicki was young, Audrey was the Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed cooking and could make the best fried chicken, especially the wings. On September 1, 1952 Ingeborg married Charles L. Cowsert. Ingeborg worked for Missouri Knife Co. in St. Clair, Missouri and would retire after 20 plus years. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and drawing gnomes and mushrooms. She loved to watch Jeopardy and complete crossword puzzles and pogo games. For years Ingeborg cherished being able to get together with Oma's German Coffee Clutch to reminisce about life in Germany. Donny enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and making people smile through his humorous demeanor. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Colvin. Joan Schwieder Frazier Joan Schwieder Frazier was born in 1937 to Latham and Ruby Schwieder and passed away January 15, 2021 at the age of 83 years. She spent her first years in a house located on what is now the Steelville community Hoppe Park land. She loved to tell stories of their big garden by the spring and her daddy handing out fresh corn to all comers. Later the family moved to the top of Robin Hill Drive in the house that overlooks Main Street and the old high school. Growing up Joan loved her walking horse named Man and won numerous awards around the State in the "Ladies Open Show" class against grown women. As a teen she taught dance to many Steelville girls. After graduation from Steelville High School she graduated from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri then moved to St. Louis, Missouri to teach at Riverview High School until marriage took her to Springfield, Missouri. There she had a son, Anthony Frazier, and as all dutiful mothers will understand spent the next 18 years following his every move. Joan moved to Columbia, Missouri to be close to her family. She told her granddaughters with tales of Steelville past like ice skating on the Glen Ellen pond (owned by the Jonas family, kin to the Schweder's as all old families in small towns end up being kin), her giant Saint Bernard, the fun to be had after school on the way to the downtown drug store with their 5 cent fountain cokes and visiting her daddy and Uncle Ed at the family business, Schwieder Ford. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby and Latham Schwieder, cousin, Nancy (Schwieder) Baker; and by her comrade-in-arms whom she cherished as a sister, Sandra (Schwieder) Hampe. On June 4, 1961 she married Donald L. Fryer by Brother T.B. Conway. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald on January 14, 2015. Norma Ellene Gorman Norma Ellene (nee Laney) Gorman of Quincy, Illinois was born on November 7, 1914 in Cook Station, Missouri to Ernest and Docia (nee Mahuran) Laney and passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at the age of 106 years. She married Wayne Gorman in Yuma, Arizona on April 7, 1935. Norma attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse in Cook Station, Missouri and traveled 15 miles by train to attend high school in Steelville, Missouri. She was the only member of her immediate family to graduate from high school. Education was important to her. As a Navy wife Norma lived her early married years in Long Beach, California. Prior to WWII she and her husband moved to St. Louis, Missouri where they lived until moving to Quincy, Illinois in 1949. Her faith was a major part of who she was. When she moved to Quincy she became a member of what is now Faith Presbyterian Church where she served for the rest of her life. At age 70, after 25 years of service Norma retired from Blessing Hospital where she had served as Director of Admitting and Information. For more than 50 years she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Norma shared her Christian values with her family by her example. She loved to travel. She had the opportunity to travel abroad visiting the Holy Land, Greece, Spain and Austria. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Gorman in 1976; three brothers and their wives, Vencent (Helen) Laney, Max (Mary) Laney, and Jimmie (Lucille) Laney; and grandson, Brett Gorman. Ina Mae Groves Ina Mae (nee Caringer) Groves of Vichy, Missouri was born on Tuesday, November 14, 1933 in Huzzah, Missouri to William "Bill" Charles and Ina Lucille Brown Caringer and passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 1 day. Ina grew up between the farm at Huzzah and Dry Creek outside of Cherryville, Missouri. She helped on the farm doing various chores, went to Slowensky School, graduated from Cherryville High School and later attended Draughon Business College in Springfield, Missouri. On September 5, 1952 she married Gerald Stinson Groves in Cherryville, Missouri. They moved to San Diego, California to live on the base where Gerald was stationed while in the Marine Corps. They moved back to the St. Louis, Missouri where she worked for FruCon Construction for two years before deciding to be a stay-at-home mom. She became involved with Girl Scouts. They would go camping, hiking and do service projects. She also did work with Boy Scouts as Tim was growing up, helping with pinewood derbies and skill shows. Ina later worked at So Fro Fabrics in Ballwin, Missouri for 11 years. Ina was a great cook, loved canning and gardening just the same. She would organize trips to Wyoming and Colorado. She would take Amy and Laura shopping and crank up Neil Diamond in the Ford Cougar. She loved Neil Diamond's music and went to five concerts over the years. Ina Mae and Gerald moved to Vichy, Missouri in 2000. There they began hunting. She got her first deer, turkey and many squirrels. She loved her song birds and fed them year-round. She married James Elmer Martin in 1952. He preceded her in death in February of 1963. She later married Patrick Hall, who also preceded her in death. Elizabeth was a talented seamstress and worked for 25 years as a seamstress for California Manufacturing, a clothing manufacturer formerly located in St. James, Missouri. After retirement she continued her sewing skills by quilting and crocheting for family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Francis Bestman; husbands, James Martin and Patrick Hall; one sister, Lulu Williams; and one brother, Lee Bestman. Tim grew up and attended school in the St. Clair and Pacific, Missouri areas. He began his trucking career as a young man and continued throughout the entirety of his life. Tim met Elizabeth Edwards, in 1998 and were married in 2012. Tim loved all kinds of music and was always generous of his time. Tim was a socialite and had many friends. He often enjoyed "swapping" with them and having coffee. He recently fulfilled his dream of starting his very own trucking company, Hammonds & Sons Trucking this past summer. Barry obtained the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy. He retired as a Lithographer for Southeast Missourian. He also owned and operated Hazen Bird Farm in Gray Summit, Missouri for several years. Barry enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, camping, riding horses, gardening or flying his model airplanes. He was awarded the National Archery Champion in 1961, as well as the Missouri State Archery Champion. He loved to play the guitar and banjo, collect antique irons and tinker with things. At the age of 60, Barry obtained his pilot license. He would later purchase and pilot his own plane. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin E. and Dorothy "Dottie" Hazen; and first wife, Charlotte (Grissom) Hazen. On December 21, 1946 Muriel married Ellsworth Hodge in a dual wedding ceremony shared with her brother Emmitt and Imogene (Glenn) Bullock. A lifelong resident of St. James, Missouri, Muriel graduated John F. Hodge High School in 1946. She received her Bachelor's Degree in 1961 from, Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri and continued her education with a certification in special education. Muriel taught in several one room schools before teaching in the St. James Public Schools System having taught a total of 37 1/2 years before retiring. In addition to her teaching, Muriel was a former member of the St. James Civic Club, The Missionary Mite Society, Veteran of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Missouri State Teachers Association, served as Director of Vacation Bible School and taught Sunday School at the Christian Church in St. James. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellsworth Hodge; son, John F. Hodge; parents, Robert and Mae Bullock; and five sibling, Ethel Tivis, Edna Hendrix, Fred Seddon, Everette and Emmitt Bullock. She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Rankin of Jefferson City, Missouri; four granddaughters, Penny Doty Little of Jefferson City, Missouri, Amy (Ryan) Burcham of Wentzville, Missouri, Michelle (Sean) Huffman of Lee Summit, Missouri and Brandy Hodge of Olathe, Kansas; seven great grandchildren, Madison, McKinley and Riley Doty, Braden and Brooklyn Burcham, Jaden and Cayman Claire; other relatives and friends. Thomas "Tom" Miles Hunter Thomas "Tom" Miles Hunter of Davisville, Missouri was born August 7, 1939 in Moline, Illinois to Wilbur Miles and Rose Vandevelde Hunter and passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021 at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 2 days. Tom married Illene Hardi in Milan, Illinois on January 10, 1959. Tom was employed as General Manager of Wickes Furniture in St. Louis, Missouri for many years. Since living in this area, he worked for the Crawford County Assessor's office. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and had been a member of the Jaycee's in Moline, Illnois for a number of years. Tom enjoyed rebuilding old sports cars, such as MG's, woodworking and taking care of his lawn. He also enjoyed remodeling houses. He was preceded in death by parents, Wilbur and Rose Hunter; and four brothers, James, Richard, Jon and Robert Hunter. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Illene Hunter of Davisville, Missouri; three sons, Scott (Kelly) Hunter of Barnhart, Missouri, Stephen Hunter of O'Fallon, Missouri and Stanley Hunter of Chicago, Illinois; three daughters, Stephanie (Scott) Eissler of St. Charles, Missouri, Suzanne (Robert) Doherty of Salem, Missouri and Sheila (Leroy) Heckemeyer of St. Elizabeth, Missouri; one sister, Joyce (William) Michel of Cincinnati, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. (Call) Little on February 1, 1960 in St. Louis, Missouri and passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at the age of 60 years. Jimmie married Regina Haynes on June 12, 1978 in St. Louis, Missouri. Jimmie honorably served his country in the United States Navy. He was a Pipefitter with Local 562 in St. Louis, Missouri for several years, before owning and operating Little Paving and Construction. He enjoyed fishing, building and fixing things, older model 70's cars and playing baseball when he was younger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie Lee Little and Donna J. (Call) Huguley. He is survived by his wife, Regina (Haynes) Little; two children, Angela Little and companion Kenneth Overshon and Nicholas Little and companion Margaret Labbie, all of Steelville, Missouri; three grandchildren, Emily, Jimmy and Ethan; one sister, Kelley Ilaqua of Littleton, New Hampshire; one niece, Kaitlyn Ilaqua; step father, Lee R. Rosalie "Lee" Pennington Rosalie "Lee" Pennington of Bourbon, Missouri was born on Tuesday, June 29, 1943 to George Edward and Effie Evelyn Rook Nash and passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the age of 77 years, 6 months and 12 days. Lee received her GED in May of 1978 and moved from Arnold, Missouri to Bourbon, Missouri in 1981. She worked in factories for many years and enjoyed growing her vegetable gardens every summer. She loved doing cross-stitch and made full size quilts, lap quilts, kitchen towels and pillow cases for friends and family. Rosalie was a good cook and one of her pastimes was searching out new recipes to try. Later in life, Rosalie become an over-the-road truck driver. She would travel by herself all over the country and quite often would take her daughter April. She also had her own boat and loved to fish. Lee would team up with April against their friends to play Canasta weekly. She had accepted the Lord later in life and attended C Hwy. Full Gospel Church in Bourbon, Missouri. She read the Bible as long as she could see. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Effie Nash; and her "special sister", Peggy Berger. She is survived by her daughter, April (Mike) Kramer of Bourbon, Missouri; granddaughter, Megan Lee Kramer of Bourbon, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Maria Matilde Hortencia Quinonez-Velazquez Maria Matilde Hortencia Quinonez-Velazquez of St. James, Missouri was born on August 29, 1954 in La Campana, Durango, Mexico to Roberto and Aurora (Nunez) Quinonez and passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021 at the age of 66 years. At the age of three, she met the boy that she would marry 14 years later. He was six and his father offered a ride to Hortencia and her mother, Aurora, who were heading to get to the next town over. The driver had many sons and asked Hortencia's mother to choose one for her beautiful daughter, jokingly she pointed at a green-eyed boy. Hortencia moved to the U.S. and settled in Chicago, Illinois where her uncle owned multiple restaurants and she worked as a waitress during the day and at a factory by night, all to save and send back to her mother and seven brothers back home in Mexico. One day, Hortencia would bring her family to the U.S. At the age of 17 she married Margarito (Mark) Velazquez. In 1994, they purchased a farm in St. James, Missouri, and also a family business in Rolla, Missouri called the American Motor Inn. Hortencia and Mark enjoyed raising cattle, horses, as well as gardening. She had a green thumb when it came to flower beds and vegetables. She always shared the bounty with friends and family. She was a woman of God, praying daily and asking for guidance for herself and her family. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jesus Manuel Quinonez. Mike was self-employed. He loved being outdoors whether hunting, fishing or being on the river. He also enjoyed making wood carvings. Linda Sue Reed Linda Sue Reed of Dillard, Missouri, formerly of Desloge, Missouri, was born February 26, 1949 in Bonne Terre Missouri to Henry and Juanita (Eaton) Bohnenkamp and passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021 at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 13 days. On July 13, 1968 she married Michael R. Reed. She was raised in Desloge, Missouri. Sue, as a young lady, worked for her uncle Marvin as a dental assistant in Flat River. After her marriage she worked as a telephone operator in Rolla, Missouri but her true passion was shopping. Her swimming pool was her "happy place". If you ever came across her you know about her beautiful smile a nd infectious laugh. She knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and shared her faith with her family and friends. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Viburnum, Missouri. In 2014 Sue was involved in a car accident that nearly ended her life. Cathie or Moo, as she was known by her family and friends, married Kenneth Butts. After his passing, she married Robert Stamm on December 28, 2002, who passed away on August 5, 2008. Cathy was a 1982 graduate of John F. Hodge High School in St. James, Missouri. She was a people person. She enjoyed country music and board games and loved to travel. She was an avid animal lover.
