MO Local Obituaries for the Week of January 25, 2012 Geraldine G. “Gerry” Bandy Geraldine G. “Gerry” Bandy of Sullivan, Missouri, was born at Steelville, Missouri on November 13, 1926 to Benjamin and Minnie Alice (Moutray) Mallow and passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the age of 85 years. Gerry, as she was known by her family and friends, was raised in the Steelville area and had lived in several areas in Missouri before settling in Ellisville, Missouri.  Gerry was owner and operator of the Grover Inn at Grover, Missouri for 38 years before retiring and moving to Sullivan, Missouri in 2002. She was united in marriage to Elmer Miller, which later ended in divorce. After which she was married to Al Long who preceded her in death and then was married to Gene Bandy who preceded her in death in 1998. Gerry loved nature and watching her flowers grow. She enjoyed bird watching and especially loved her Chow dog, Buck. She loved to travel, go fishing and attend family reunions and picnics.  Gerry lived for the St. Louis Cardinals and never missed a game.  She had a spunky personality and a great sense of humor. She was also known to be very independent and loved going to Cracker Barrel. She is survived by several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2012 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012 from the Church of Christ in Sullivan, Missouri with Jerry Craft officiating. Nola Mae Conway Nola Mae Conway of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of St. James, Missouri, was born October 20, 1941 in Potosi, Missouri to Archie Veach and Rosie Bell Lamkey Shivers and passed away Friday January 20, 2012 at the Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri at the age of 70 years and 3 months. On April 25th 1956, at Potosi, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Donald Gene Conway. She was preceded in death by her parents, Archie Veach and Rosie Shivers; her husband, Donald of 32 years on January 27, 1988; an infant daughter, Crystal Dawn Conway and one brother, Junior Shivers. Raymond Lee “Ray” Durbin Raymond Lee “Ray” Durbin of Cuba, Missouri was born on November 17, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri and passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012 at his home at the age of 77 years. Ray was the owner/operator of Durbin Construction Company for many years. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as an airplane mechanic. A member of the NRA, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, reading western novels and was a jack of all trades. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Alma (Bauer) Durbin. Vida C. Foreman Vida C. Foreman of Farmington, Missouri, was born August 16, 1918 at Steelville, Missouri to Oren P. and Edith (Coleman) Moutray and passed away on January 22, 2012 at Southbrook Skilled Nursing Center at the age of 93 years. Vida was a practicing beautician in Farmington for many years, working out of her home. She was a long-time member of the Farmington First Baptist Church, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She also donated many years of service to the Farmington Meals on Wheels Program. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oren and Edith Moutray; husband, Albert Foreman; daughter, Sandra Pack; grandson, James Pack; three step- children, Albert Gene Foreman, Lawana Wulfers and Patricia Taylor; four brothers, Donald, Anson, Wendell and Otho Moutray, and a sister, Marguerite Broughton. Charles worked doing maintenance, janitorial at a nursing home during the past years and honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. On April 27, 1947 in Astoria, New York, she was united in marriage to Peter Mortillaro who preceded her in death in 2008. Frances was of the Catholic faith. Bettie was united in marriage to Jerald “Jake” Rodgers in St. James, Missouri on March 11, 1961. Bettie Rodgers enjoyed her grandchildren and being with them very much. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin Sr. and Ruth Foust; her husband, Jerald “Jake” Rodgers on February 1, 2011; one son, Mark A. Claus; two brothers, Ervin Foust Jr. and Jimmy Foust. On April 7, 1951 in St James, Wynette was united in marriage to Roy Arthur Southard. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Ethel Moreland; husband, Roy on February 16, 2007; one daughter, Tammy Wynette Southard; one son, Roy Eugene Southard and one brother, Bob Moreland. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Kay Southard of Rolla, Missouri; brothers, Arnold Eugene Moreland and wife Anna Marie of Holt Summit, Missouri and Rainey Moreland and wife Tillie of St. James, Missouri; sister-in-law, Annetta Moreland of Vichy, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Vodden Master Sergeant Retired Donald C. Vodden 93, the last living Charter Member of the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club in Sturgis, South Dakota was born July 17, 1918 to Myrtle and George Vodden in Sturgis, South Dakota and passed away January 21, 2012 at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in St. James, Missouri. Don worked as a young child delivering the Denver Post and doing odd jobs to help support his family of nine.  Later he cut ice for Hoel Ice Service. In the mid 1930’s Don raced motorcycles, racing in the first “Rally” in Sturgis, in 1938.  Don was also a professional prizefighter, winning the South Dakota middle weight championship in the early 1940’s. Don joined the Army Air Corps before WWII, later choosing the Army. Don fought during WWII, in the Pacific front and served in the Korean War. He retired at Ft. Hood, Texas in 1962. Don married fellow motorcycle enthusiast Joan Cruickshank in 1943. While moving many times, choosing to settle in Harker Heights, Texas upon retirement.  Don and Joan built and managed Don’s Rentals for years. Don married Martha Nell Lewis in 1978.  They loved to travel in their motorhome and continued running Don’s Rentals. Don was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Sturgis, South Dakota in 2003, something he was very proud of.  Don only missed five Rallies in his lifetime, three while stationed in Germany.  Don last attended the Rally in 2010 at the age of 92! Don was a lifetime member of the DAV, VFW, American Legion, the Over The Hill Gang Motorcycle Club, the White Plate Flat Trackers Association; Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club and was a Master Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Myrtle Vodden; brothers, George, Duane and Wallace; sister, Lucille and Juanita and his first wife, Joan Cruickshank Carlson. He is survived by his wife, Martha Vodden of Eldon, Missouri; daughters, Janet Rother and husband Kenneth of San Antonio, Texas and Donna Eliott and husband Larry of Bigfoot, Texas; grandson, John Brennon Duncan and fiancée Kimberly Rose of San Antonio, Texas; and great granddaughter, Brynn Avery Duncan of Giddings, Texas; sister: Marion Mellow of Pismo Beach, California; step children, Wanda and Kenneth Clark of Jarrell, Texas, Robert and Loretta Lewis of Harker Heights, Texas and Cathy and George Golden of Eldon, Missouri; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Carl William West Carl William West was born January 14, 1941 to John E. and Catherine (Weigle) West at Sullivan, Missouri and passed away at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana on January 15, 2012. Carl spent his early years in Cuba, Missouri.  His family moved to Indianapolis in 1956.  He was in the first graduating class of North Central High School and attended Indiana University. Carl’s parents stressed Christian values and he and his siblings were encouraged to develop self-confidence and to set goals for the future. His experience of polio, destroying the muscles of his left shoulder at the age of four, presented a life altering challenge. With the care and support of The Shriners Hospital in St. Louis, along with his family, he learned skills that enabled him to compensate.  As a teenager he was the most sought after golf caddy at Algonquin Country Club in Webster Groves, Missouri while simultaneously managing his lucrative lawn care business. His enjoyment of the game of golf allowed him to play a great round with a distinctive swing. During the past six months, Carl’s greatest challenge came with the diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer. During this struggle he was chosen by St. Vincent’s Hospital as a personality appearing in a media marketing campaign for the benefit of lung cancer research. For over 35 years Carl has been known as a respected neighborhood businessman and entrepreneur, operating automotive service stations, convenience stores and car washes. He has been recognized nationally for industry excellence, receiving many exclusive awards and participated in numerous local committees and national petroleum company advisory councils. Carl was a long-term member of Millersville Lodge #126 AF & AM, Murat Shrine Temple, the Scottish Rite and Hillcrest Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Jordan West and her son, Robb Day; the mother of his children, Constance McCammond West; children, Catherine (Keith) Allen, Christina (John) Hawkins, Carl John (Michelle) West and Chad W. West (Pam Gladson); brother, John W. Iva Mae Westholz Iva Mae Westholz nee Miller of Cuba, Missouri was born on Monday, June 24, 1929 in Gasconade County to Burt and Ethel M. Dotson Miller and passed away on Friday, January 20, 2012 at Cuba Manor at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 27 days. Iva married Walter Charles Westholz on October 18, 1947 in Owensville, Missouri. She worked as a trimmer in the shoe industry for many years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cuba, Missouri. Her hobbies were reading and working with crafts. She was preceded in death by her parents, Burt and Ethel Miller; husband, Walter; daughter, Carol Jean Westholz; sisters-in-law, Helen Krause, Alice Ferling, Gladys Nieman, Loretta Spurgeon and Faith Moore; and brother, Allan Miller. Donald R. “Woody” Woodson Donald R. “Woody” Woodson of Leasburg, Missouri was born to Fred and Dorothy (Cizek) Woodson on December 19, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri and passed away Wednesday January 18, 2012 at Phelps County Regional Medical Center at the age of 85 years. Donald was a retiree of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #8920 and the Leasburg American Legion Post. In his spare time he enjoyed crossword puzzles and word search games.
